Mayur Hazarika, a resident of Tezpur in Assam’s Sonitpur district, is a doctor by profession. Mayur worked as a medical officer with the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam, till he cleared the Civil Services exam and stated that he was inspired by Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar to pursue the Civil Services exam.ย 

He is a football lover and loves solving Rubikโ€™s cube during his free time. He feels it is fun and challenging to solve Rubikโ€™s cube when he is not busy studying.

Educational Background

  • Mayur Hazarika finished his 12th grade at Nagaon’s Ramanujan Junior College, which is affiliated with the Assam state board.
  • He attended Don Bosco School for his higher secondary education. He received a rank in both the HSLC and HS exams.
  • He completed his MBBS at Guwahati Medical College in 2020.ย 
  • This was his first attempt at the civil service exams, and he now wishes to join the Indian Foreign Services.

Mayur Hazarikaโ€™s Inspiration

Mayur started his preparations during the first half of 2021 and completed it by the end of that year. He says โ€œI did not prepare for the Civil Services examination in a detailed manner.โ€

His parents have been very supportive, and he credits them for his spectacular achievement. Mayur mentions that he is inspired by Indiaโ€™s Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar and prefers joining the Indian Foreign Service (IFS).

Mayur Hazarikaโ€™s Reason For choosing Civil Services

Mayur was inclined towards Civil Services after his 12th grade, but due to a lack of guidance on approaching the Civil Services, and chose the medical field.ย 

Mayur developed a shart interest in the Civil services exam during his third or fourth year of medical school. He was more interested in foreign diplomacy and international relations. And, then he decided to pursue his interest and join Indian Foreign Service.

Mayur Hazarikaโ€™s UPSC Preparation Strategies

  • Even though he was attending online courses, Mayur preferred self-study. He emphasised the importance of constant work and building an in-depth grasp of how and when to use learned information.
  • During his third and fourth years of MBBS, he became interested in Civil Services.
  • He began his preparations in early 2021 and finished before the end of the year.
  • In the event of a topical question, he relied mostly on self-study and online video lectures.
  • He balanced his education and his responsibilities as a doctor successfully. He used to study for an hour in the morning and 3 to 4 hours after his shift.
  • Following his UPSC Prelims exam, he doubled his study hours.ย ย 
  • Mayur devised a study strategy for each level of the exam: preliminary, mains, and interview. He was able to find all pertinent information and study resources for each of the exams.

UPSC Exam Preparation Strategies

  1. Master your Detailed Application Form. Be aware of what you are writing in it. Mastering your DAF will give you more leverage among your fellow competitors in your UPSC Interview.
  2. Dedicate at least a year to Civil Services exam preparation and make a plan of action to get started.ย 
  3. Prepare for UPSC CSE with a study plan that you know you can stick to. Developing a plan of action and sticking to it can also be quite useful.
  4. Don’t overspend on a lot of study materials and resources. If you want to avoid the confusion that comes from the difference in the explanation of topics, it’s best to focus on a small number of books and materials.ย 
  5. Internet use can be distracting, so limit your time on it. Mayur loves solving Rubikโ€™s cube but also suggests utilising your free time cautiously and avoiding wasting hours on something that can be engaging yet disadvantageous from an exam point of view.
  6. Stay calm. Candidates take some time to gain momentum for UPSC preparation that works. It is best to stay focused and avoid an overwhelming attitude towards preparation. If any concept seems hard and you get stuck, seek help from online resources and videos. This has been a key strategy for Mayur Hazarika that helped him crack the IAS exam even with self-study.
  7. Be thorough with your UPSC syllabus. Cover as many topics as possible and gain an in-depth knowledge of topics.ย 
  8. Practice multiple mock tests and mock interviews. This will help you gain insights into your strengths and weaknesses, and you will focus better on the preparation in a directed manner.
