UPSC Success Stories – Visually Challenged Kempa Honnaiah’s Success Story

Once the UPSC results are out, one can read many IAS success stories. But some stories are a bit more special than the others.

They talk of candidates who achieve success in the very tough civil services exam despite enormous challenges and situations under which most people would buckle.

In this article, you can read the amazing story of UPSC topper Kempa Honnaiah, who cleared the IAS exam despite being visually challenged.

IAS Topper Story – Kempa Honnaiah Background

  • Kempa Honnaiah is the son of late Honnaiah and Muniyamma. Muniyamma is a farmer.
  • His native village is Chowdanakuppe in Tumakuru district, Karnataka.
  • He graduated from Maharaja College. He completed his PG from Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) and his M.Phil. from Kannada University, Hampi.
  • He was preparing for the IAS exam while pursuing his M.Phil. When the results were announced, he was working as a Kannada lecturer at Vontikoppal Government PU College in Mysuru.
  • Kempa lost his eyesight in standard III when he suffered retinal damage. He discontinued his studies after this.
  • But he was lucky enough to be offered a seat at a blind school in Mysuru. There has been no looking back since.

Journey towards the IAS

  • Kempahonnaiah acknowledges the unwavering support of his family and friends behind his splendid achievement.
  • He thanked his wife, Anchita for her unflinching help and encouragement. In his own words, “My wife, Anchita, has been a pillar of support all along by helping me read, make notes and making me listen to recordings. She is the main force behind this achievement.”
  • He also used the Braille script for reading textbooks. His wife prepared notes and also read out to him aloud.
  • His medium of exam for written as well as the IAS interview was Kannada.
