TAPAS UAV [UPSC Notes]

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have achieved a significant milestone with the successful test of the command and control capabilities of the TAPAS UAV. In this article, you will learn about the TAPAS UAV and its capabilities from the IAS exam perspective.

What is TAPAS UAV?

The TAPAS UAV, developed by DRDO, is a Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle.

  • It has an impressive range of more than 18 hours and can operate at altitudes of up to 28,000 feet.
  • It can fly autonomously or be remotely controlled, depending on pre-programmed flight plans.
  • It can also be operated in both day and night conditions.

Successful Test from Ground Station to Warship:

  • The test conducted in June 2023 involved commanding the TAPAS UAV from a ground station in Chitradurga, Karnataka, to the INS Subhadra, a warship located 148 km away from the Karwar naval base.
  • The UAV flew for 3 hours and 30 minutes, with the warship assuming control of the operations for 40 minutes.

TAPAS UAV Significance

The successful test signifies a major achievement for the TAPAS UAV program, demonstrating its remote operation capabilities.

  • It is particularly valuable for the Indian Navy, as it enhances their intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

Collaboration between DRDO and Indian Navy:

  • The test also highlights the increasing cooperation between DRDO and the Indian Navy in developing indigenous defense technologies.
  • The success of the TAPAS UAV test strengthens India’s self-reliance in defense production.

Future Deployment and Applications:

  • Following the successful test, the TAPAS UAV is expected to enter service with the Indian Navy in the near future.
  • This UAV will serve as a valuable asset for the Navy, enabling long-range and high-altitude operations for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.
  • Additionally, the TAPAS UAV can be utilized for targeting enemy ships and aircraft, further enhancing India’s defense capabilities.

Conclusion:

  • The successful test of the TAPAS UAV marks a significant advancement for India’s defense industry and showcases the country’s growing technological capabilities.
  • It strengthens India’s defense capabilities, promotes indigenous defense technologies, and contributes to the country’s self-reliance in defense production.
  • The deployment of the TAPAS UAV in the Indian Navy will have a positive impact on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, further enhancing India’s defense capabilities.
