1. Compressed Biogas Project

Syllabus – GS 3, Science & Technology; Developing new technologies.

Prelims – First cow dung to compressed biogas project commenced by HPCL in Rajasthan.

Context – Compressed Biogas Project from cow dung is under the GOBAR – Dhan Scheme.

Details

  • This cow dung to compressed biogas project will be HPCL’s first project under the waste-to-energy portfolio.
  • The plant will consume 100 tons of dung per day to produce biogas – an automotive fuel. The project will be commissioned within a year.
  • This project comes under the GOBAR – Dhan Scheme.

About GOBAR Dhan Scheme

GOBAR-Dhan was launched by the Government of India in April 2018 as a part of the Biodegradable Waste Management component under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) (SMB-G) to positively impact village cleanliness and generate wealth and energy from cattle and organic waste. The main focus of GOBAR-Dhan is to keep villages clean, increase the income of rural households, and generate energy and organic manure from cattle waste.

2. India-U.K Joint Consultative Committee (JCC)

Syllabus – GS 2, International Relations; Bilateral Agreements involving India

Prelims – India-U.K JCC Meet.

Context – India – United Kingdom join hands to share experiences and best practices in areas of functioning of commercial courts.

Details

  • In July 2022, GoI and the UK signed an MoU to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the area of law and justice. A Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) was constituted in this regard; the third in-person meeting of the JCC was held in August 2022 in New Delhi.
  • It was agreed upon to facilitate the exchange of experience and best practices in the area of functioning of commercial courts, use of technology in the management of cases, alternate dispute resolution mechanisms (ADR) like arbitration and mediation, justice delivery, enforcement of contracts and also in the areas of simple legislative drafting.

3. Retrofitment in BS (Bharat Stage) Ⅵ Vehicles

Syllabus – GS3, Conservation, environmental pollution and degradation.

Prelims – Retrofitment in BS Ⅵ Vehicles.

Context – CNG and LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) kits in petrol and diesel vehicles. 

Details

  • The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has allowed the retrofitment of CNG and LPG kits in petrol and diesel vehicles that are compliant with BS-Ⅵ emission norms. Earlier such modifications were permissible only in vehicles that were compliant with BS-Ⅳ emission norms.
  • CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is an environment-friendly fuel and its usage as fuel will reduce the emission levels of carbon dioxide, smoke and other particulate matter in the air.
