1. Multi-tranche Financing Facility (MFF)

Context – India and ADB signed a $ 125 million loan to improve urban services in Tamil Nadu.

Details –

  • Multilateral funding agency Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $125 million loan agreement with India to develop climate-resilient sewage collection and treatment, and drainage and water supply systems in three cities of Tamil Nadu – Madurai, Coimbatore and Thoothukudi.
  • The financing is the third and the last tranche of the $500 million Multi-tranche Financing Facility (MFF) for the programme approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 2018 to build priority water supply, sewerage, and drainage infrastructure in strategic industrial corridors across 10 cities in the state.
  • The loan will support the commissioning of 813 km of new water supply distribution pipelines. The loan will support the development of two sewerage treatment plants in Coimbatore. In Thoothukudi, a climate-resilient storm water drainage system will be developed.

Multitranche Financing Facility (MFF) –

  • ADB offers its developing member countries different types of financing modalities to support governments in boosting economic growth and solving development challenges.
  • ADB’s multi-tranche financing facility supports complex projects that require a larger investment and longer commitment than other types of ADB loans can provide. ADB provides a series of tranches when the investments are ready and the borrower requests financing. It fosters a deeper relationship between ADB and the borrower, ensuring that a large-scale endeavour will have a long-term support.

2. “Cessation of Operation” Agreement with ZUF

Context – Centre inks “Cessation of Operation” agreement with Manipur rebel outfit – ZUF.

Details

  • In a significant boost to peace in the Northeast, the Centre and the Government of Manipur signed a ‘Cessation of Operation’ agreement with Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), an insurgent outfit of Manipur that has been active for more than a decade.
  • Representatives of the armed group, ZUF agreed to abjure violence and join the peaceful democratic process as established by the law of the land. The agreement provides for the resettlement and rehabilitation of the armed forces.
  • To oversee the enforcement of the agreed ground rules, a joint monitoring group will be constituted.
  • The centre has over the years signed various agreements to end insurgency and boost development in the north-east to make the region “insurgency free and prosperous”.

3. Prashasan Gaon ki Ore

Context – The success of the ‘Prashasan Gaon ki Ore’ campaign.

Details

  • Prashasan Gaon ki Ore – A nationwide campaign for the redressal of public grievances and improving Service Delivery was launched by Dr Jitendra Singh on December 19 during the Good Governance Week, Second Sushasan Saptah (December 19-25, 2022).
  • Prashasan Gaon ki Ore 2022 has witnessed significant progress – 53.80 lac public grievances were redressed, 310 lac service delivery applications were disposed of, 949 innovations in governance were documented and 257 Vision India@2047 District level documents were uploaded on the GGW22 portal.

4. Dhanu Yatra Festival

Syllabus – GS1, Indian Culture – Festivals

Prelims – Odisha’s Dhanu Yatra.

Context – PM Shri Narendra Modi offered greetings to everyone with the commencement of the 11-day festival.

Details

  • The ‘Dhanu Yatra’ festival, considered to be the world’s largest open-air theatre, began in the western Odisha town of Bargarh.
  • The vibrant Dhanu Yatra is associated with the culture of Odisha and marks the victory of good over evil.
  • The festival came into existence in Bargarh in 1947-48 as part of the celebration of the country’s Independence and is held annually.
  • The festival, which is being organised after a gap of two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will conclude on January 6 next year. Around 3,500 artists from 155 cultural troupes from across the country and abroad will perform at the Rajdurbar and Rangamahal during the festival this year.
