1. Save Wetlands Campaign

Context: ‘Save Wetlands Campaign’ was launched on the occasion of World Wetland day (2nd February).

Details:

  • The Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, launched the ‘Save Wetlands Campaign’.
  • It is structured on a ‘whole-of-society’ approach facilitating positive actions for wetland conservation at all levels of society and involving all stakeholders.
  • It aims to sensitize people about the value of wetlands, increase the coverage of wetland Mitras, and build citizen partnerships for conservation in a span of one year.
  • During the event, two publications were also released:
    • India’s 75 Amrit Dharohar- India’s Ramsar Sites Factbook: It contains detailed information about 75 Ramsar sites in India.
    • Managing Climate Risks in Wetlands – A Practitioner’s Guide: It provides step-wise guidance on assessing the climate risks and integrating the adaptation and mitigation responses into wetland management.
  • Wetland ecosystems play a crucial role in securing ecological, economic, and climate security.
  • During the celebration of Wetland Day in Goa, the National flag was unfurled and the signboard was unveiled in Nanda Lake (the first Ramsar site of Goa).
  • The celebration was followed by a Regional Consultative Workshop for Restoration and Integrated Management of Wetlands at Goa which saw the participation of 48 representatives from 7 states under Mission Sahbhagita.

Mission Sahbhagita:

  • Mission Sahbhagita is a platform for sharing wetland management experiences, best practices, success stories, and associated challenges.
  • It was launched by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in 2022 with a mission of a healthy and effectively managed network of 75 wetlands of national and international significance that:
    • Supports water and food security
    • Provides a buffer from floods, droughts, cyclones, and other similar extreme events
    • Generates employment 
    • Conserves species of local, national, and international significance
    • Help in climate change mitigation and adaptation actions
    • Recognizes, conserves, and celebrates the cultural heritage

2. 3rd Khelo India Winter Games

Syllabus: GS 2, Government schemes and initiatives.

Prelims: Khelo India Winter Games.

Details:

  • The Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur along with Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri Manoj Sinha launched the 3rd Khelo India Winter Games Mascot, Theme Song, and Jersey.
  • Khelo India Winter games is a part of Khelo India Abhiyan that aims to encourage youth towards games and make India an emerging soft sports power in the world.
  • Around 1500 players from all across the country will participate in Khelo India Winter Games. It will encourage the youth of Jammu and Kashmir towards sports apart from promoting tourism in the region.
  • The games are scheduled to be held from 10th to 14th February 2023 at Gulmarg, (Jammu and Kashmir).
