1. First Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) Meeting under India’s Presidency of G20

Syllabus: GS 2, International Relations.

Mains: Important International institutions, agencies, and their mandate.

Prelims: G20 presidency’s first Environment and Climate Sustainability meeting.

Context: G20 presidency’s First Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) Meeting will be organized from 9 to 11 February 2023 in Bengaluru.

Details:

  • Under India’s presidency of the G20, 13 Working group meetings will be organized through the Sherpa Track. Environment, Climate, and Sustainability is one of the major working groups.
  • Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) will host the four meetings of the Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG). The first meeting is scheduled for 9-11 February 2023 in Bengaluru.
  • The meeting will focus on the following areas:
    • Promotion of Blue Economy along with Coastal Sustainability
    • Restoration of Degraded Lands and Ecosystems
    • Enhancement of Biodiversity
    • Strengthening of Circular Economy
  • A two-day conference was held among the officials of MoEFCC and Karnataka State Government on the 18th and 19th of January 2023 for better preparedness and coordination.
  • During the conference, the use of the innovative Information Technology solutions deployed by the Karnataka State Forest Department was appreciated and highlighted. For instance,
    • e-Parihara is an online application that helps in processing and sanctioning ex-gratia claims in man-animal conflicts.
    • e-Gastu is an Android-based platform that captures forest patrolling and field activities.
  • Various cultural events will be showcased to the delegates during the meeting.

2. Naming Islands of Andaman and Nicobar

Syllabus: GS 2, Polity and Governance.

Mains: Government Policies and interventions.

Context: PM to participate in a programme to name the 21 largest unnamed islands of Andaman & Nicobar Islands after 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees on 23rd January.

Details:

  • Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi will participate in a ceremony on Parakram Diwas to name the 21 largest unnamed islands of Andaman & Nicobar Islands after 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees.
  • Prime Minister will also unveil the model of the National Memorial dedicated to Netaji that is proposed to be built in Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep.
  • The decision is taken to pay the tribute to the real-life heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the sovereignty and integration of the country.
  • It is decided that the largest unnamed island will be named after the first Param Vir Chakra awardee, the second largest unnamed island will be named after the second Param Vir Chakra awardee, and so on.

3. India International Science Festival (IISF)-2022

Syllabus: GS 3, Science and Technology.

Mains: Developments in the field of Science and Technology.

Prelims: India International Science Festival 2022

Context: India International Science Festival was inaugurated in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

Details:

  • India International Science Festival, IISF-2022 was inaugurated in Bhopal. The theme of the festival is “Marching towards Amrit Kaal with Science Technology and Innovation”.
  • It was highlighted during the event that India is preparing for a big leap in Quantum Technology.
  • The path-breaking decision of the government such as unlocking the space sector, liberalization of drone technologies, Green Hydrogen Mission, etc were also appreciated.
  • Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of Science and Technology underlined the contribution of women scientists in major Science and Technology missions including the Gaganyaan Mission.
  • Almost 15 events will be held during the four-day festival like Students Science Village, Mega Startup Expo, etc.
  • Moreover, Face-to-Face with New Frontiers in Science will be a platform for interaction and short discussion-based sessions of students and researchers.
