1. Key points related to Agri-exports

What’s in News?

The 15th Finance Commission held a meeting with the Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, and senior officials of the Ministry.

Key points related to Agri-exports:

  • India is the second highest agriculture producer in the world.
  • It has competitive advantage over other countries in agriculture as its diverse agro-climatic conditions created diverse crop portfolio potential; two main cropping seasons (Kharifand Rabi) and relatively low cost of labour and manufacturing.
  • Given the Competitive edge, India is only ranked 11thglobally in terms of agriculture exports.
  • While India imports over $20B in agriculture products, it still maintains a significant trade surplus of $18B.

Details of the agriculture related reforms as part of the fiscal stimulus package:

  • Government of India had announced various measures to boost agriculture to strengthen Infrastructure Logistics and Capacity Building for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Processing Sectors and in order to re-orient its proposed formulation on the agriculture reforms and incentives for exports.
  • Recently, amendments were made to the Essential Commodities Act.
  • The Farming Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020 was promulgated.
  • The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance, 2020 was promulgated.

2. Torpedo Decoy System

What’s in News?

Anti – Submarine Warfare capability of the Indian Navy has received a major boost with the conclusion of a contract for Advanced Torpedo Decoy System Maareech.

  • Torpedo Decoy System Maareech is capable of being fired from all frontline warships.
  • It is capable of detecting, locating and neutralizing incoming torpedo.
  • Design and development of this anti-torpedo decoy system has been undertaken indigenously DRDO labs (NSTL and NPOL).
  • Bharat Electronics Limited, a Defence PSU, would undertake the production of this decoy

This induction not only stands testimony to the joint resolve of the Indian Navy and DRDO towards indigenous development of defence technology, but has also given a major fillip to the Government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and the country’s resolve to become ‘Atmanirbhar’ in niche technology.


3. Operation Samudra Setu

What’s in News?

INS Jalashwa arrived off Bandar Abbas, Iran for another mission under the Indian Navy’s Operation Samudra Setu.

4. Sardar Patel National Unity Award-2020

What’s in News?

The online nomination process for Sardar Patel National Unity Award has been extended till 15th August 2020.

  • It is the highest civilian award in the field of contribution to the unity and integrity of India.

5. Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan web portal

What’s in News?

Union Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare has launched the web portal of the Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan.

6. Nasha Mukt Bharat: Annual Action Plan (2020-21)

What’s in News?

Nasha Mukt Bharat: Annual Action Plan (2020-21) for 272 most affected districts was e-Launched on International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking.

Details

  • The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is the nodal Ministry for drug demand reduction, which coordinates and monitors all aspects of drug abuse prevention (which includes the assessment of the extent of the problem, preventive action, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts, dissemination of information and public awareness).
  • The Plan for 2020-21 would focus on 272 most affected districts.
  • It would be a three-pronged attack combining efforts of:
    • Narcotics Bureau,
    • Outreach/Awareness by Social Justice and
    • Treatment through the Health Dept.

The Action Plan has the following components:

  • Awareness generation programmes;
  • Focus on Higher Educational institutions, University Campuses and Schools;
  • Community outreach and identification of dependent population;
  • Focus on treatment facilities in hospital settings;
  • Capacity Building Programmes for Service Provider.

International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking:

  • International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed on the 26th of June every year since 1989.
  • The day is also meant to commemorate Lin Zexu’s efforts towards the strategic dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong in China right before the First Opium War on the Chinese Mainland.
  • The theme of World Drug Day 2020 is Better Knowledge for Better Care.
  • The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit trafficking is used as a day to stimulate a sense of responsibility among people around the world, especially youngsters and teenagers.
  • The UN with the aid of its anti-drug abuse arm, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) spreads awareness, urges governments to avoid stimulating the Narco economy and deal with the Illicit trafficking of drugs in the disguise of legal pharmaceutical businesses.

Note:

  • According to the World Drug Report 2017, released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), about a quarter of a billion people used drugs at least once in 2015.
  • Drug abuse, does not only include consumption of drugs such as cocaine, hallucinogens, cannabis, opiates among others, but also includes prescription medications such as painkillers and sleeping pills.
