Vice President pays tributes to former PM, Shri Narasimha Rao on his birth anniversary.
Details:
- 28th June is the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister of India, PV Narasimha Rao.
- Rao is most remembered for ushering in the Indian economy’s liberalisation reforms. For more on the economic reforms of 1991, click on the linked article.
- He also started the Look East Policy with respect to India’s foreign relations with the southeast Asian countries.

Context:
29th June is observed as Statistics Day in India in honour of P. C. Mahalanobis.
Details:
- The Indian Government started to observe this day in 2006 acknowledging the vast contribution of P. C. Mahalanobis in establishing the national statistical system.
- 29th June is the birth anniversary of Mahalanobis, a pioneer statistician.
- Mahalanobis contributed vastly to the design of large-scale sample surveys in India. He is also best remembered for the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure, and for being one of the members of the first Planning Commission of free India.
- In 2019, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation instituted a new award, namely, the Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis National Award in Official Statistics for recognizing outstanding achievement of official statisticians in Central Government, State Governments and Institutions.
- The Ministry recognises the outstanding contribution for high-quality research work in the field of applied and theoretical statistics benefitting the official statistical system through the Prof. C. R. Rao and Prof. P. V. Sukhatme awards, awarded in alternate years.
- Every year, Statistics Day is celebrated with a theme of current national importance, which runs for a year by way of several workshops and seminars, aimed at bringing about improvements in the selected area.
- The theme of Statistics Day, 2019 was “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” and carrying this forward the theme of Statistics Day, 2020 is selected as SDG- 3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages) & SDG- 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls).

3. TRIBES India products on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM)
Context:
Union Minister of Tribal Affairs launches Tribes India products on GeM and a new website of TRIFED through video conference.
About TRIFED:
- TRIFED stands for the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India.
- It is under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs of the GOI.
- TRIFED is the apex national organisation involved in the improvement of the livelihood and empowerment of tribal people.
- It is the nodal agency for the implementation of the Van Dhan scheme.
- TRIFED was established in August 1987 under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 1984 by the Government of India as a National level Cooperative body.
- TRIFED is mandated to bring about the socio-economic development of tribals of the country by institutionalising the trade of Minor Forest Produce (MFP) & Surplus Agricultural Produce (SAP) collected/cultivated by them.
- It plays the dual role of both a market developer and a service provider, empowering the tribal people with knowledge and tools to better their operations in a systematic, scientific manner and also assist them in developing their marketing approach.
- TRIFED is actively involved in capacity building of the tribal people through sensitisation and the formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs). TRIFED is engaged in training the tribals in several activities so that they can effectively carry them out.
- The organisation also assists them in exploring and creating opportunities to market the developed products in national and international markets on a sustainable basis.
- TRIBES India is the brand under which the sourced handcrafted products from the tribal people are sold.
- There are 120 brick-and-mortar TRIBES India outlets across the country. It also has an e-commerce website.
