1. Social Security (Jan Suraksha) Schemes

Syllabus – GS2, Welfare Schemes: Social Security Schemes.

Context–  PMJJBY, PMSBY and APY complete eight years of providing social security cover.

Details

  • To give financial security to the people from the unorganised section of the country, the GoI launched two insurance schemes Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and also introduced Atal Pension Yojana (APY) to cover exigencies in the old age.
  • The National Mission for Financial Inclusion was launched in 2014 with the aim to ensure that every citizen in the country has access to financial literacy, banking facilities and social security coverage. Building on this initiative three social security schemes were launched on 9th May, 2015.
  • Under PMJJBY, PMSBY and APY, 16.2 crore, 34.2 crore and 5.2 crore enrollments have been done respectively till 26th April 2023. Campaigns are being organised throughout the country at each Gram Panchayat to provide coverage to eligible beneficiaries under these schemes.
  • Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) – It is a one-year life insurance scheme renewable from year to year offering coverage for death due to any reason. Persons in the age group of 18-50 years are entitled to enrol under the scheme.
  • Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) – It is a one-year accidental insurance scheme renewable from year to year and offers coverage for death or disability due to accident. Persons in the age group of 18 – 70 years are entitled to enrol under the scheme.
  • Atal Pension Yojana (APY) – It is to provide financial security and cover future exigencies for the people in the unorganised sector. It is administered by Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) under the National Pension Scheme (NPS). It is open to all bank account holders in the age group 18-40 years who are not income tax payers and the contributions differ based on the pension scheme chosen.

2. Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi

Syllabus – GS2, Education: Issues relating to development and management of Social Sector/Services relating to Education.

Context – The Ministry of Women and Child Development is launching ‘Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi’, an ECCE (Early Childhood Care and Education) program.

Details

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development is launching “Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi” (on 10th May 2023), an ECCE program to ensure that India has the world’s largest, universal, high-quality pre-school networks envisaged under the National Education Policy (NEP, 2020). 
  • As per the guidelines of the NEP, with Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi, the government has taken up the goal of strengthening the foundations of the country’s future generations.
  • Children’s development in every domain will be targeted – cognitive, development, physical and motor development, socio-emotional-ethical development, artistic/cultural development and the development of communication and early language, literacy and numeracy.
  • All the states should follow the ECCE task force recommendations for a play-based, activity-based learning pedagogy, targeted specifically at the developmental milestones of 0-3-year-olds as well as 3-6-year-olds, including special support for Divyang children.
  • Through the ‘Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi’ ECCE policy, every child would be provided with two hours of high-quality preschool instruction on a daily basis.
  • To give a push to ECCE, anganwadi centres will be reimagined and recalibrated to focus not only on the nutritional aspect of children and mothers but also on early learning of children under 6 years, particularly those under 3 years, which has proven to be a foundation for a child’s development. It has been found that 85% of the brain development is achieved by the age of 6 years.

3. AIME 2023

Syllabus – GS3, Various Security forces and agencies and their mandate. 

Prelims – AIME 2023

Context– The sea phase of AIME 2023 successfully concluded on 8th May 2023 in the South China Sea.

Details

  • The harbour phase of the Inaugural ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise was held at Changi Naval Base ( 2-4 May) and the sea phase was held in the South China Sea (7-8 May). Approximately 1400 personnel manning nine ships participated in the Sea Phase of the multilateral naval exercise.
  • The Sea Phase demonstrated the ability of Indian and ASEAN navies to operate as an integrated force to promote peace, stability and security in the region. 
  • AIME 2023 provided an opportunity for Indian Navy and ASEAN navies to work together closely and conduct seamless operations in the maritime domain.
  • INS Delhi and INS Satpura were part of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam.
    • INS Delhi is India’s first indigenously built guided missile destroyer.
    • INS Satpura is an indigenously built guided missile stealth frigate.

4. 162nd Rabindra Jayanti

Syllabus – GS1, Important Personalities.

Prelims – Rabindra Jayanti.

Context – Shri Amit Shah attended the birthday celebrations of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in Kolkata.

Details

  • The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation attended the birthday celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore and described him as a multifaceted personality who contributed across many fields throughout his life.
  • Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian who received the Nobel Prize in 1913 and he has the honour of writing the national anthems of two countries. He established Shanti Niketan and provided a new dimension to education and made an indelible contribution to the field of education.
  • Gurudev laid great emphasis on the promotion of his mother tongue, Bengali and the emphasis on Indian philosophy and thought is quite visible across his works of art.
  • Gurudev had a great contribution to the freedom struggle and his thoughts had an immense impact on the entire movement.
  • Tagore’s thoughts are equally relevant and inspirational in today’s times and his thoughts are a wealth for India and the whole world.
