1. India-Zimbabwe Joint Trade Committee

Mains: India – Zimbabwe relations

Context:

3rd Session of India-Zimbabwe Joint Trade Committee held in New Delhi.

Details:

  • Both sides reviewed the bilateral trade and noted the vast potential between the two countries. 
  • Both sides agreed to make concerted efforts towards enhancing bilateral trade. 
  • Both sides agreed to explore the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for regulatory cooperation in digital transformation solutions, tele-medicines, rough diamonds, fast payment systems and traditional medicine among others.
  • Both sides identified several areas of focus for enhancing bilateral cooperation in pharmaceuticals, geospatial sector, healthcare, machinery and mechanical appliances, vehicles, electrical machinery, mineral fuels, etc.
  • Both sides also agreed on closer collaboration between the Investment Promotion Agencies and Chambers of Commerce of both sides.

2. Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024

Context:

The first set of citizenship certificates after notification of Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 issued.

Details:

  • The Government of India had notified Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 on 11th March 2024. 
  • The Rules envisage the manner of application form, the procedure for processing applications by the District Level Committee (DLC) and the scrutiny and grant of citizenship by the State Level Empowered Committee (EC). 
  • In pursuance of these rules, applications have been received from persons belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who have entered India up to 31.12.2014 on account of persecution on grounds of religion or fear of such persecution.

3. Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS)

Context:

Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) – Quarterly Bulletin (January-March 2024).

Details:

  • The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) is a committee constituted under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoS&PI) on the recommendation of the National Statistical Commission (NSC) to develop the survey methodology including the sample design for generating monthly quarterly labour market data.

The key findings of the Quarterly Bulletin (January-March 2024) are given below.

  • Unemployment Rate (UR) in urban areas decreased from 6.8% to 6.7% during January – March 2023 to January – March 2024 for persons of age 15 years and above.
  • Female UR decreased from 9.2% in January – March 2023 to 8.5% in January – March 2024.
  • Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in urban areas has shown an increasing trend from 48.5% to 50.2% from January – March 2023 to January – March 2024 respectively for persons aged 15 years and above.
  • Female Labour Force Participation Rate in urban areas rises from 22.7% to 25.6% from January – March 2023 to January – March 2024, reflecting the Overall Increasing Trend in LFPR.
  • Increasing Trend in Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for persons of age 15 years and above from 45.2% in January – March 2023 to 46.9% in January – March 2024.
  • The Female Worker Population Ratio in urban areas rises from 20.6% to 23.4% from January – March 2023 to January – March 2024, reflecting the Overall Increasing Trend in WPR.
