1. Sikkim Statehood Day

What’s in News?

PM greets people of Sikkim on their Statehood Day.

Details:

• On 16 May 1975, Sikkim became the 22nd state of the Indian Union, and the monarchy was abolished. 
• To enable the incorporation of the new state, the Parliament amended the Indian Constitution.

History:

• The Kingdom of Sikkim was founded by the Namgyal dynasty in the 17th century. It was ruled by a Buddhist priest-king known as the Chogyal. 
• It became a princely state of British India in 1890. 
• After 1947, Sikkim continued its protectorate status with the Republic of India. 
•  In 1973, anti-royalist riots took place in front of the Chogyal’s palace. 
• In 1975, the monarchy was deposed by the people. 
• A referendum in 1975 led to Sikkim joining India as its 22nd state.

Constitutional Provisions:

• Indian constitution empowers the Union government to create new states out of existing states or two merge one state with other. This process is called the reorganisation of the states.
• The basis of reorganisation could be linguistic, religious, ethnic or administrative.
• Article 3 of the Indian Constitution provides for the formation of new States and alteration of areas, boundaries or names of existing States.

2. Atma Nirbhar Bharat scheme

What’s in News?

The PM announced an economic stimulus package for ₹20 lakh crore (estimated at 10% of the GDP), with a clearly defined leap towards economic reforms with an aim to transform the country to Atmanirbhar Bharat, or a self-reliant, resilient India.

4. ARCI scientists develop next-generation biodegradable metal implants

What’s in News?

Scientists at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram both autonomous institutes under the Department of Science & Technology (DST) have jointly developed new generation Iron-Manganese based alloys for biodegradable metal implants for use in humans.

Details:

• Iron-Manganese based alloy Fe-Mn is a promising biodegradable metallic implant.
• It exhibits a single austenitic phase (a non-magnetic form of iron) with MRI compatibility.

Significance:

• Biodegradable materials (Fe, Mg, Zn, and polymer) can participate in the healing process and then degrade gradually by maintaining mechanical integrity without leaving any implant residues in the human body.
• These are better alternatives to currently used metallic implants.
• Metallic implants remain permanently in the human body and can cause long-term side effects like systemic toxicity, chronic inflammation, and thrombosis.

5. Shri Dharmendra Pradhan interacts with PMUY beneficiaries

What’s in News?

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas & Steel interacted with over 1500 PMUY beneficiaries across the country.

Details:

• Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana (PMUY) has completed four years of its successful journey.
• It was launched in the year 2016. 
• The scheme aims at distributing LPG connections (clean fuel) to women of BPL families.
