1. 19th ASEAN-India summit

Syllabus: Bilateral, Regional and Global Groupings and Agreements involving India and/or affecting India’s interests.

Mains: India-ASEAN relationship as central pillar of India’s ACT-EAST policy

Context:

  • The Vice President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, led the Indian delegation, including the External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar, at the 19th ASEAN-India Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Details:

  • At the summit, ASEAN and India adopted a joint statement announcing the elevation of the existing Strategic Partnership to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. 
  • There were also reiteration of commitments to enhance India-ASEAN cooperation in areas such as maritime activities, counter-terrorism, transnational crimes, cyber security, digital economy, regional connectivity, smart agriculture, environment, science & technology, tourism, among other areas. 
  • Speaking at the event, the Vice President hailed the deep cultural, economic and civilizational ties between India and South East Asia. He stated that India-ASEAN relationship forms the central pillar of India’s ACT-EAST policy and reiterated India’s support to ASEAN centrality in the Indo-Pacific.

2. Garuda- VII

Syllabus: Joint exercises of India

Prelims: Ex Garuda and other joint exercises with France

Context:

  • The seventh edition of the bilateral air exercise between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the French Air and Space Force (FASF), ‘Exercise Garuda-VII’ concluded at Air Force Station, Jodhpur recently.

Details:

  • The joint exercise allows an opportunity for the two Air Forces to indulge in professional interaction and sharing of operational knowledge and experience. The exercise also provided a platform for cultural exchange between the Air Force personnel of both the countries.
  • Apart from Garuda exercise, India and France also have the joint exercise of Ex Shakti (Army) and Varuna (Naval).

3. No Money for Terror conference

Syllabus: Linkages of Organized Crime with Terrorism.

Mains: Tackling terror financing

Context:

  • Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India would be organising the 3rd Ministerial ‘No Money for Terror’ Conference in New Delhi.

Details:

  • The Conference would bring together representatives of 75 countries and international bodies for discussions on combating terrorist financing. This would be subsequent to the ones held by the international community in the previous two Conferences in Paris (2018) and Melbourne (2019).
  • It will include discussions on technical, legal, regulatory and cooperation aspects of all facets of terrorism financing. 
  • Discussions will be focussed  on global trends in terrorism and terrorist financing, use of formal and informal channels of funds for terrorism, emerging technologies and terrorist financing and requisite international co-operation to address related challenges.
