Mains: Government initiatives to improve employment scenario in the Indian economy

Context:

  • The Prime Minister launched Rozgar Mela via video conferencing.

Details:

  • During the ceremony, appointment letters were handed over to 75,000 newly inducted appointees.
  • This initiative is in line with the government’s vision to recruit 10 lakh personnel.

Significance:

  • The initiative is in line with the administration’s efforts to providing job opportunities for the youth and ensuring the welfare of citizens by creating new avenues and opportunities for livelihood and income for the youth.
  • The timely completion of the process of selection for the lakhs of vacancies in a few months and issuing appointment letters is a positive development given that applying for government jobs has been a cumbersome process and the prevalence of favouritism and corruption in the selection process.

Simplifying government recruitment:

  • Provision for self-attestation and abolition of interviews in Group C and Group D posts of the Central Government, have helped ease the process for the aspirants.
  • Selection processes have been simplified and made tech-enabled for expeditious recruitment.

Initiatives taken to improve employment situation in India:

  • Job-intensive sectors like agriculture, MSME and khadi sector have been promoted with supportive policy structure and schemes.
  • Skilling of the youth has been made a top priority and schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana have been started in this direction.
  • Initiatives like liberalising drone policy, opening up space policy will provide an impetus to self-employment opportunities in these sun rise segments.
  • Provision of around 20 Lakh crore rupees worth of loans under Mudra Yojana will ease financing options for the new age entrepreneurs.
  • The Start-Up India campaign provides the much needed policy support to would be entrepreneurs. 
    • The number of StartUps in India has gone up from 300 to 400 in 2014 to more than 75,000 today and India ranks third in the world in StartUp ecosystem.
  • Jobs under MGNREGA provide job guarantee to the unskilled labour of the country.
  • The government has also started the PLI scheme to give incentives on a production basis to promote the employment intensive manufacturing sector.
  • Employment generation through infrastructure creation has been a major focus area of the administration.  The development work being carried out on a large scale has been creating lakhs of employment opportunities for the youth at the local level.
