1. National Games

Prelims: National Games

Context: 

The Prime Minister inaugurated the 37th National Games in Goa.

Details:

  • More than 10,000 sportspersons from across India will compete in about 43 events from 26 October to 9 November.
  • It is for the first time that the national games are being held in Goa.
  • The first national games were held in undivided India in Lahore in 1924 and until 1938, the event was known as the Indian Olympic Games.

2. Nilwande Dam

Syllabus: GS-1, Geography 

Prelims: Nilwande Dam

Context:

PM Modi dedicated the Nilwande Dam to the people in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district.

About Nilwande Dam:

  • Nilwande Dam refers to two associated gravity dams situated in Ghatghar village in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.
  • Both dams create a lower and upper reservoir for the 250 MW pumped-storage hydroelectric power station. 
  • The upper Nilwande dam is 15 m (49 ft) tall and on the Pravara River, a tributary of the Godavari River. The lower Nilwande dam is 86 m (282 ft) tall and on the Shahi Nalla River.
  • The dam work had started in 1970 but was delayed considerably.
  • The dam is expected to benefit farmers in 182 villages and irrigate 64,260 hectares in Ahmednagar and Nashik.

3. Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023

Prelims: Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023

Mains: What are dark patterns? 

Context:

Centre launched the Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023 to design & prototype innovative apps or software that can detect dark patterns on e-commerce platforms. 

Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023:

  • The objective of the initiative is to provide protection to consumers from all types of unfair trade practices.
  • The winners will receive a certificate and a cash prize. The first prize winners will receive Rs 10 lakhs.

The Department of Consumer Affairs published the draft Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns in September 2023.

4. Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2023

Syllabus: GS-3, Security & Defence

Prelims: Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2023

Context:

The Indian Army in partnership with the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) is organising the Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2023.

Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2023:

  • This is the first edition of an event of this nature organised by the Army and is being held in New Delhi.
  • This Dialogue will carry out a comprehensive analysis of security challenges in South Asia and the Indo-Pacific. 
  • It will focus on crafting a roadmap for collaborative security measures in the region to fortify India’s position as a ready, resurgent, and relevant stakeholder among the nations of this region.
  • Speakers include eminent personalities from India and abroad.
  • The Army plans to make this a recurring event.

5. World Dwarfism Day

Syllabus: GS-2, Health

Prelims: World Dwarfism Day

Context:

World Dwarfism Day is observed on 25 October every year.

About World Dwarfism Day:

  • The day spreads awareness for achondroplasia, a bone growth disorder that causes dwarfism. 
  • The day, 25 October, was chosen in honour of American actor Bill Barty who had dwarfism and whose birthday fell on this day.
  • A person with dwarfism will usually be less than 4ft 10″ in height. However, other medical issues can also arise due to dwarfism, such as spinal stenosis, hydrocephalus, arthritis and more.
