To score well in the UPSC interview, the candidate can divide his preparation topics into four kinds. They are profile related, current affairs, questions based on situation and behavioural questions.
Profile Related Questions
The UPSC panel often asks questions based on the profile of the candidate to assess his/her mental stability and performance. The questions can be related to educational background, work experience, reasons for choosing civil service, optional Subject preference of services, district and State he/she belongs to etc. Therefore, the candidate must be well prepared to answer all the questions related to his/her own profile.
Candidates are expected to have an interest not only in their special subjects of academic study but also in the events which are happening around them both within and outside their own State or Country.
Current Affairs
A UPSC CSE aspirant must always know the current events of national and international importance. In the UPSC interview, the questions may be asked on various current social economic and political topics. The candidate should have a balanced view of the topic. The candidate can take a stand on the topic but he/she should have a justification for the same.
Questions based on the situations
The UPSC interview panel gives a situation and asks the candidate how he/she would respond to the situation. These questions are asked to assess one’s credibility as a bureaucrat or how efficiently one’ll be able to deal with the ground situations.
Behavioural Questions
Behavioural questions allow you to show your problem-solving skills and discuss your abilities, personality and approach to challenges. Your answers should highlight self awareness, growth, self reliance and willingness to help another individual
Therefore the candidates are advised to attend mock interviews to assess their performance and to avoid some common mistakes. Make a note of your weaknesses and strengths and try to avoid them in the interview.
