IES Exam Pattern

The UPSC IES is a national-level competitive examination that consists of a three-stage selection process. These three stages are:

  1. Prelims: The Prelims is the first stage in the selection process. It consists of two question papers – Paper 1 for General Studies and Engineering Aptitude and Paper 2 for Engineering Discipline. Paper 1 consists of 100 questions and carries 200 marks, while Paper 2 consists of 150 marks and carries 300 marks.
  2. Mains: The Mains is stage 2 of the selection process. The candidates who clear the first stage of the Prelims are allowed to sit for the Mains. The Mains also consists of two papers, both for Engineering Discipline. Each of the two papers contains eight optional questions, out of which candidates need to answer five. Each paper is of 300 marks.
  3. Personal Interview: This is the final stage of the selection process. The candidates who have been shortlisted for the interview have qualified for the two stages of the written examination. This round consists of 200 marks based on which candidates are evaluated.
