Cholederm [UPSC Notes]

The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) has developed a new wound care product called Cholederm. In this article, you can read more about the cholederm for the IAS exam science and technology segment.

What is Cholederm?

Cholederm is a Class D medical device that has gained approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).

Development of Cholederm

  • Cholederm is made from the extracellular matrix of decellularized pig gall bladders. The extracellular matrix is a mesh of proteins that provides support and structure to cells.
  • Researchers at SCTIMST engineered the extracellular matrix into a membrane form that can be used to heal wounds.

Approval and Delayed Commercialization:

  • In 2017, SCTIMST transferred the technology for Cholederm to M/s Alicorn Medical Pvt Ltd, a start-up biopharmaceutical firm.
  • However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the firm faced delays in obtaining a manufacturing license for commercial production and sale.
  • The recent approval by CDSCO is considered a milestone achievement for SCTIMST and M/s Alicorn Medical Pvt Ltd.

Significance of Cholederm

Cholederm is the first indigenously developed Class D medical device to meet all regulatory requirements.

  • This is a significant accomplishment, as it demonstrates the innovative capabilities of Indian research institutions.
  • Cholederm is also expected to be more affordable than imported products.
  • This is because the manufacturing process is simpler and does not require the use of expensive imported materials.

Future Directions and Research:

  • Researchers at SCTIMST are continuing to develop Cholederm. They are working to improve the product’s performance and to expand its applications.
  • For example, they are developing a gel formulation of Cholederm that can be injected into the body to treat cardiac injuries.
  • They are also exploring the use of Cholederm to modify the surfaces of other medical devices, such as catheters and stents.

Conclusion:

  • The approval of Cholederm as a Class D medical device is a major breakthrough for wound care. It is a more affordable, innovative, and effective alternative to imported products.
  • The future of Cholederm is promising. Researchers at SCTIMST are working to improve the product and expand its applications.
  • This has the potential to revolutionize wound care and improve the lives of millions of patients around the world.
