The inventor of email, Ray Tomlinson 74 years is dead.  

Certain Facts about Ray Tomlinson

  • Tomlinson sent the very first email back in 1971 while he was working in Boston at Bolt, Beranek, and Newman (BBN), a company that developed a very early version of the internet, called ARPANET.
  • He  introduced the SNDMSG command that actually sent mail files to the recipient’s computers and was the first networked messaging program.
  • Decided to use the ‘@’ symbol to designate a user from its host. Termed the sign as  “the only preposition on the keyboard.”
