The below table gives the difference between Himalayan and Peninsular Rivers
S.No | Basis | Himalayan Rivers | Peninsular Rivers |
1 | Source | The sources are the glaciers of the Himalayan mountains | The source is mainly the peninsular plateau and the central highland |
2 | Nature | The rivers here are perennial as the source are glaciers | These rivers are not perennial. In other words, they dry up during some parts of the year |
3 | Drainage | Antecedent. Since they flow from mountains down the plains, they form dendritic patterns | Superimposed and result in drainage patterns such as trellis or radial |
4 | Catchment Area | These rivers have a very large basin | These rivers have comparatively smaller basins |
5 | Age | These rivers are generally in their youth stage | These are old rivers |
Different Drainage Patterns
Dendritic
The rivers having such a pattern resembles the branches of a tree. An example could be the rivers of the northern plains
Radial
In this pattern, the rivers originate from a hill and flow downwards in all the directions. Example: rivers in Central India
Trellis
Here, the primary tributaries of the river flow parallel to each other and the secondary tributaries join at right angles
Centripetal
In this pattern, the river water collects in depression such as a lake
