On analysing the trend of current affairs based questions, one can understand that questions are generally one or one and a half years old, but can be older than that also. Therefore, how many years of current affairs should you study?
- You can cover one or one and a half years of current affairs for UPSC prelims
- If you have gone through previous years’ question papers, you would know that certain old schemes are also asked. To cover such government schemes, make a list of important government schemes that are in news and have been modified. The old schemes can be studied from books that comprise static information. However, do not spend a lot of time studying all the old schemes.
- Go through the previous years’ question papers and make a list of frequently asked topics that are based on current affairs e.g.: the National Food Security Act, 2013, important schemes and programmes etc.
- You should go through the current affairs compilation provided by reputed institutes if you are unable to read newspapers every day and if current affairs are older than a year. You can refer to the page on current affairs for comprehensive news analysis, PIB related news, current affairs quiz etc.
- If you don’t have enough time, or you are a working professional, you can cover one year of current affairs and can make short notes on important schemes or programmes that are more than one year old.
- Current affairs are vast and are dynamic in nature, therefore, first complete studying the static subjects like history, geography, Indian economy etc and then focus on current affairs. Do not leave the static topics, assuming that current affairs are more important than static areas. Both are equally important. You should make such a strategy that will help you in scoring higher marks.

In order to cover current affairs that are more than one year old, you should refer to current affairs compilations or magazines that cover important facts related to old schemes, missions, treaties etc. You should focus on important topics rather than studying each and every fact that is more than one year old.
