Hindi is one of the most popular languages in India and is understood by a vast majority of the population. The Government of India uses Hindi as one of the official languages for communication between various departments along with English. The UPSC includes Hindi in the list of optional literature subjects for the IAS Mains exam. Hindi is also one of the options for the compulsory language paper in the UPSC Mains. Hindi has a vast body of literature including fiction and non-fiction in the form of poetry, prose and essay collections, scientific literature and religious epics. Hindi has a number of dialects, the literature of which are included in the syllabus of the UPSC. The syllabus for this subject includes the development of the Devanagari script from ancient scripts used in the subcontinent, the development of Hindi as the lingua franca of the country during the freedom movement and Hindi grammar in its entirety. It also focuses on literary criticism of various works in Hindi and a number of prominent writers and their works.

Hindi literature is a popular choice among IAS aspirants as the study material available for UPSC preparation is vast and easy to find. It is possible to score high in this paper as a large part of the Hindi syllabus can be covered from old NCERT books as compared to other literature subjects which do not have similar availability of study material. Also, since it is the language used by most people in the country in some form or the other, it is useful for IAS officers to know Hindi.
