The Kerala government, in June 2023, announced establishing an “affordable” network infrastructure across the state at the cost of ₹1,500 crore. KFON is a state-run internet connection service initiative, which aims to provide free internet connections, with non-discriminatory access to all. 

  • A major highlight is to ensure internet connection for 20 lakh families below the poverty line.
  • Its major services are connectivity to government offices, leasing of dark fibre, internet leased line, fibre to the home, wifi hotspots, colocation of assets under network operating centres and Point-of-Presences, internet protocol television, OTT, and cloud hosting.
  • With this launc, Kerala became the first state to have its own broadband service K-FON.
