National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) - NIRF Ranking 2021

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank institutions of higher education in India. The Framework was approved by the MHRD and launched by the Minister of Human Resource Development on 29 September 2015.

National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) – 10 Categories

NIRF ranks education institutions under 10 different categories. The 1st NIRF rankings released in 2016 had only 4 categories of institutions, 2017 saw the addition of 2 more categories of institutions. In 2020, overall 3800 education institutions had participated in the NIRF ranking process. NIRF 2020 rankings also saw the addition of a new category i.e. Dental institutions.

NIRF Ranking – Main Parameters

The education institutions are ranked under NIRF as per 5 different parameters, which are listed below.

  1. Teaching, Learning & Resources – This parameter checks the core activities in the education institutions.
  2. Research and Professional Practice – Excellence in teaching and learning is closely associated with the scholarship
  3. Graduation Outcome – Tests the effectiveness of learning/core teaching
  4. Outreach & Exclusivity – Lays special emphasis on the representation of women
  5. Perception – Importance is also given to the perception of an institution

The NIRF ranking is based on 10 categories of institutions and 5 parameters. Engineering, Universities, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, Law, Overall, College and Dental are the 10 categories of institutions.

Why is NIRF ranking important?

The credibility of the education institute is built by the NIRF ranking. The ranks attained by the educational institutions help students choose the best college to enrol in. Also, NIRF ranking promotes healthy challenge among different institutes to improve on their functioning and other aspects so as to attain a spot in this ranking.

Are NIRF rankings reliable?

NIRF ranking is taken a reliable ranking for it is brought by the Ministry of Education. The clustered parameters on which institutions are ranked are weight-based. The public relations (PR) parameter has not been given much weight so as to avoid false claims and lead to credible rankings.
