Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language which is the lingua franca of the state of Punjab. It is also widely used in Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana along with parts of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu. It is one of the official languages of India and is written in both Gurumukhi and Persian derived Shahmukhi script. Its literature is also included in the UPSC optional subjects list. This article lists out the syllabus of Punjabi literature for IAS Mains exam. Punjabi is written in the Gurumukhi script for the Civil Services Exam.
Punjabi literature syllabus consists of topics like the history of the language and literature, its major literary traditions, major dialects and development of the Gurumukhi script. It also includes a critical analysis of major works by famous authors in Punjabi.

Punjabi has a rich literary tradition of poetic works, novels and essays. The success of the Punjabi community has also enabled Punjabi literature to become very popular and study material is not hard to find. However, only serious students of the language should take up this optional to be successful in the IAS exam.
