A Lorry Driver’s Son who became an IAS Officer despite Economic Challenges

It was his dream to become an IAS officer from childhood and in 2006, K Nandakumar secured the 30th rank in UPSC Civil Services Examination. He is an icon for all UPSC IAS aspirants and a true motivation for students also. He proved that nothing is impossible. He had a dream which came true only because of his hard work.

K Nandakumar hails from Namakkal district in Tamil Nadu. His father is a lorry driver and mother, a homemaker. His parents worked together to bring up their children. He has one younger brother Aravind Kumar who is an engineering graduate. Nandakumar did his schooling from Namakkal Government South School. After schooling, he joined Pollachi Mahalingam College for engineering.

Due to the feeling that he had to help his father run the family amidst financial difficulties he worked in a private company at Coimbatore. He worked and studied at night. The result was extreme fatigue resulting from enormous mental and physical effort. This began affecting his preparation and he slowly left his focus on UPSC IAS Exams.

Despite financial challenges, he finally decided to quit his job at an engineering firm to devote full-time for preparation. He chose Tamil literature and Geography as his optional subjects for UPSC civil Services Mains Exam.

There is no hidden secret to success, as it was his hard work and nothing else that led him to his goal. He used to study in groups. He used to read newspapers to update the latest GK and current affairs.
