1. ‘Agni P’ Ballistic Missile

Prelims: About ballistic Missiles

Mains: Role of Agni missile series in the development of defense technology

 Context: DRDO has successfully tested the new generation nuclear capable ballistic missile Agni P from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam island off the coast of Odisha.

Salient Features:

• Agni – P is a variant of the Agni class of missiles which consists of two-staged canisterised missiles that offer solid propellant ballistic missiles with dual redundant navigation and guidance systems.
• The missile range capability is between 1000 and 2000 km
• The missile trajectory and parameters were monitored by telemetry, radar, electro- optical stations and downrange ships.
• It was observed that the trajectory met all mission objectives with greater accuracy.
• This new generation Agni – P missile is nuclear capable

Advantages:

• The new generation of Agni missiles can be transported from rail, road and can be stored for a longer period of time. It can be transported throughout the country.
• It weighs half of Agni III and houses new kinds of propulsion and guidance systems.
• It is accompanied by technologies found in the 4000 km range Agni IV and 5000km range Agni V.
• The new Agni P can be used to target enemy warships in the Indo- Pacific.
• It is another addition to India’s nuclear launch capability along with Prithvi short range ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles and fighter aircraft.

2. Ganga Expressway

Mains: Significance

Context: The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the Ganga Expressway in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh and also paid tribute to the revolutionaries of the Kakori Conspiracy incident who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Significance of the Ganga Expressway:

• The expressway will set an example in opening the avenues of progress in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
• This expressway draws its inspiration from the vision of the Prime Minister to provide fast paced connectivity across the country.
• The six-lane expressway will be 594 km long and will pass through Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Hardoi, Shahjahanpur, Unnao, RaeBareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj.
• The western and eastern regions of the state would be better connected along with the facility of 3.5 km long air stripfor assisting emergency take off and landing of Air Force.
• Plans to build industrial corridors have been made
• This expressway will be of enormous benefit to multiple sectors like industrial development, trade, agriculture, tourism and socio-economic development of the region.
• It will ensure five boons and they are as follows:
  • First boon – Saving people’s time
  • Second boon – Increase in convenience and ease of people
  • Third boon – Proper use of resources
  • Fourth boon – increase in capabilities
  • Fifth boon – All round prosperity

3. India beyond 75

Mains: Self-reliance in defense technology

Context: The 94th Annual General Meeting of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) was held with the central theme of India beyond 75.

Highlights of the Event

• While addressing the gathering the Defense Minister put forth the objective of making India into a defense manufacturing hub.
• The key focus is to create a strong Atmanirbhar defense industry with reduced dependency on foreign technologies for defense.
• Larger emphasis has been exerted on the capacity building of defense.
