1. National Research Development Corporation (NRDC)

Context – NRDC to undertake Technology Commercialisation for the benefit of Start-Ups.

Details

  • Presiding over a meeting with NRDC officials at CSIR, New Delhi, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh said that National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) will undertake Technology Commercialization for the benefit of Start-Ups from January 1, 2023. 
  • Dr. Singh informed that NRDC has concluded more than five thousand license agreements representing technologies in almost all industry sectors, besides facilitating the filing of over two thousand patents in India.
  • National Research Development Corporation helps the Inter-Ministerial Board of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in technically evaluating startups for their recognition to avail benefits extended by the government and to date over 7500 applications of startups have been assessed.
  • NRDC, established in 1953, is a Public Sector Enterprise. It plays a significant role in bridging R&D and industry.
  • NRDC is also associated with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and has signed an MoU with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) for mentoring and monitoring export-oriented Agri-based Startups.
  • NRDC has taken several measures to encourage and support the startup ecosystem in the country. NRDC has established and started to manage incubation centres to nurture technology-driven start-ups for maturation into commercial ventures.
    • Innovative Technology Enabling Centre (InTEC): InTEC is a start-up incubation facility created at CSIR-IMMT Campus, Bhubaneswar which is now managed by the Corporation. This facility is for encouraging the incubation of start-ups working in the area of materials, mining and allied industry sectors.
    • Mach33.aero was established in December 2021. It is a specialized start-up incubation facility created at CSIR-NAL Campus in Bengaluru. The startup encourages the incubation of start-ups in the aerospace and allied industry sectors.

2. Brahmos Air Launched Missile

Context – IAF successfully test-fired extended range version of the Brahmos Air Launched Missile.

Details

  • With an objective to increase the precision strike capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully test-fired the extended-range version of the BrahMos Air Launched missile, which can hit targets at a range of about 400 km. 
  • The tests were conducted in the Bay of Bengal region from a SU-30MKI aircraft against a ship target.
  • The dedicated and collective efforts of the Indian Air Force (IAF), Indian Navy, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Bengal Aerotropolis Projects (BAPL) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have proven the capability of the nation to achieve this feat.

3. Remote Electronic Voting Machine (RVM)

Prelims – Multi constituency Remote Electronic Voting Machine (RVM)

Context – ECI develops prototype Multi-Constituency Remote Electronic Voting Machine (RVM).

Details –

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has developed a prototype for the Remote Electronic Voting Machine (RVM) that aims to facilitate voting for domestic migrants across the country. 
  • The multi-constituency remote EVM, developed by a public sector undertaking, can cater to up to 72 constituencies from a single remote polling booth.
  • The ECI has now explored the option of using a modified version of the time-tested model of M3 (Mark 3) EVMs to enable voting at remote polling stations – polling stations outside home constituencies, for domestic migrants.
  •  The ECI  has invited all eight recognised national and 57 state political parties on January 16 to demonstrate the functioning of the multi-constituency prototype RVM. Members of the commission’s Technical Expert Committee will also be present.
