1. Exercise Desert flag VIII

Syllabus: GS 3, Security.

Mains: Various Security forces and agencies and their mandate.

Prelims: Exercise Desert Flag VIII.

Details:

• An Indian Air Force(IAF) contingent has reached the Al Dhafra airbase of the United Arab Emirates for participating in Exercise Desert Flag VIII. 
• The contingent comprises 110 Air Warriors. The IAF would participate with five LCA Tejas and two C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.
• Notably, it would be the first international event where LCA Tejas would participate outside India.
• The exercise will be held from 27 Feb 2023 to 17 Mar 2023.

Exercise Desert Flag VIII:

• It is a multilateral exercise where the Air Force of countries like  UAE, France, Kuwait, Australia, India, the UK, Bahrain, Morocco, Spain, the Republic of Korea, and the USA will participate.
• The aim of the exercise is to engage fighters in diverse fighter activities and learn from the best practices of each other.

2. W20 (Women 20) Inception meeting

Syllabus: GS 2, International Relations.

Mains: Global groupings and agreements.

Prelims: W20.

Context: W20 inception meeting will be held in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.

Details:

• Aurangabad will host W20 Inception Meeting on February 27th -28th, 2023.
• W20 is an official group under G20. Its aim is to ensure that gender concerns are mainstreamed into G20 discussions and are further translated into the G20 Leaders’ Declaration in the form of policies and commitments.
• Its purpose is to foster gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.
• The group was established in 2015 (under the presidency of Turkey).
• W20, under India’s presidency, focuses on actualizing the vision of “Women-Led Development” and creating a world of equality and equity where every woman lives with dignity and has the opportunity to thrive, transcend, and transform their lives and those of others.
• W20 2023 further intends that the W20 communique is representative, comprehensive, and enhances the status of women across the world.
• The five priority areas under India’s presidency of W20 are:
  • Women in Entrepreneurship
  • Women Leadership at Grassroots
  • Bridging the Gender Digital Divide
  • Education and Skill Development 
  • Women and Girls as change-makers of Climate Resilience Action
• W20 meetings would play a crucial role in driving collaboration and providing further impetus to gender equity and women’s economic empowerment.

3. Unying Festival

Syllabus: GS 1, Culture.

Mains: Indian art and culture.

Prelims: Unying festival.

Details:

• Siang Unying Festival is an important festival of the Adi community at Boleng, Arunachal Pradesh. It marks the new year of the Adi community.
• It is celebrated to herald the season of cultivation and the arrival of spring. 
• It strengthens the bond among the community.
• The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal attended the festival and lauded the locals for preserving the rich culture and tradition.
