1. Index of Industrial Production (IIP)

Prelims: Index of Industrial Production (IIP)

Context:

India’s IIP records a growth of 5% in the first month of the financial year 2024-25.

Details:

  • For April 2024, the Quick Estimates of IIP with base 2011-12 stands at 147.7 against 140.7 in April 2023. 
  • The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for April 2024 stand at 130.8, 144.2 and 212.0 respectively.
  • The IIP growth rate for April 2024 over the corresponding period of the previous year is 5.0 percent. The IIP growth rate in April 2023 was 4.6 percent.

2. 21st Livestock Census

Syllabus: GS-3, Agriculture, livestock

Prelims: Livestock Census

Context:

Workshop cum training session held on Pilot Survey of 21st Livestock Census today at Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh.

Details:

  • The session was conducted by the Animal Husbandry Statistics Division of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India.

21st Livestock Census:

  • The 21st Livestock Census is due in 2024 and will be conducted in participation of all the States/UTs during Sept-Dec 2024 using mobile technology and further transmitting the data online. 
  • The enumeration will be done in all villages and urban wards. 
  • Various species of animals (cattle, buffalo, Mithun, yak, sheep, goat, pig, horse, pony, mule, donkey, camel, dog, rabbit and elephant), poultry birds (fowl, duck and other poultry birds) possessed by households, household enterprises and non-household enterprises will be counted at their site, breed-wise with their age and sex.
  • Significance: 
    • ​​Apart from the uses of statistics produced by the Livestock Census for the implementation of various programmes of the Livestock Sector, it is also used for the National Indicator Framework (NIF) of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
    • The major source of Animal Husbandry Statistics is the Livestock Census (LC). 

Background:

  • The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India conducts Livestock Census across the country every 5 years since 1919 to produce Animal Husbandry Statistics. 
  • The last livestock census i.e. 20th LC was conducted in 2019.

 


3. Prelims Facts

National Commission for Indian System of Medicine

  • The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine celebrated its 4th Foundation Day.
  • The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine is a statutory body constituted under the NCISM Act, 2020 and came into force in June 2021.
  • The Commission ensures –
    • The availability of adequate and high-quality medical professionals in the Indian System of Medicine (ISM)
    • The adoption of the latest medical research by medical professionals of the Indian System of Medicine
    • Periodic assessments of ISM medical institutions
  • The NCISM has taken Initiatives and reforms in several dimensions such as medical education, medical research, medical practice, and capacity-building among others, in the field of Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Sowa-Rigpa medical systems which resulted in the transformation of these systems towards global standards.
