What should I carry to the exam centre for UPSC Mains?

The Civil Services Examination is conducted in various stages, namely the preliminary exam, main examination and the personality test/interview. The Union Public Service Commission provides a list of items that are allowed and some items that are banned from the examination venue during all the phases of the Civil Services examination. The list of allowed and banned items is given in the following sections.

List of Items that are Allowed in the UPSC Preliminary and Main Examination Centres

UPSC provides important instructions along with the e-admit card. Candidates should read the important instructions carefully and ensure that they follow it. If candidates do not follow the instructions, the Commission can take disciplinary actions including cancellation of candidature for that examination and debar the candidate from all future examinations or selections of the Union Public Service Commission.

Candidates should carry the following items to the examination centre on the day of examination:

  • Black Ballpoint Pen
  • Admit card (carry an extra copy)
  • ID Proof (Aadhar Card, Driving Licence, Passport, Voter’s ID Card etc)
  • 2 passport size photographs
  • Pencil (optional)

Candidates should follow the IAS COVID-19 guidelines given in the important instructions page. In addition to the above instructions, candidates should check the official website of the Union Public Service Commission regularly to get new updates or notifications pertaining to the IAS Exam

List of Things Banned in the UPSC Examination Venue for UPSC Prelims and Main Examination

Candidates should not carry the following items to the examination venue on the day of preliminary or main examination:

  • Mobile phones (not allowed even in switched off mode)
  • Any electronic equipment/programmable device/storage media like:
    •  Pen drive
    •  Smart watches
    •  Camera
    •  Bluetooth devices etc

Note: These electronic/programmable devices are also not allowed in the UPSC premises during the Personality Test (Interview). Candidates should not carry any valuable/expensive item(s) to the examination centres as its safety cannot be assured and the Commission will not be responsible for the loss of such items.
