The Laureus World Sports Awards 2021 have been declared in May in a digital awards ceremony from Spain. The awards have been declared annually since 2000. The award honours the greatest and most inspirational sporting triumphs of the year.

2021 World Sports Awards
More than 1000 sports media from 70 countries vote to shortlist the nominees for six categories. There are six categories for which awards are announced:
- Sportswoman of the year
- Sportsman of the year
- Team of the year
- Breakthrough of the year
- Comeback of the year
- Action of the year
There is another category of World Athlete of the Year with Disability, shortlist of which is provided by the International Paralympic Committee.
The winners are declared after the Laureus World Sports Academy votes for the nominees in the shortlisted categories.

- The word ‘Laureus’ is derived from the word ‘Laurel’ which is taken as a victory symbol in athletics.
- It was established in 1999 and the first award ceremony took place in 2000 in Monte Carlo.
- Nelson Mandela presented a speech in the first awards ceremony of Laureus World Sports Awards in 2000.
- It is held annually.
- The Laureus World Sports Awards are often referred to as the sporting equivalent to Oscars.
