- Niranjan Kumar hails from a small village called Pakri Barawan in Nawada District in Patna, Bihar.
- His family is economically weak and Niranjan used to sell khaini from his father, Arvind Kumar’s small shop, to assist him.
- His father’s monthly earning was a meagre Rs.5000.
- Having three sons and a daughter, Niranjan’s father found it difficult to provide proper education to his children.
- This led him to admit Niranjan to the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Nawada because education was free there.
- There was a written test for entry into the Navodaya school and Niranjan cleared it with ease.
- Niranjan completed his matriculation from the school in 2004.
- After that, he completed his intermediate level education from Science College in Patna in the year 2006. During this time, Niranjan took tuitions to children to earn some money, since he found it difficult to even pay the modest yearly fee of Rs.1200.
- After that, Niranjan finished his mining engineering course from IIT-ISM by taking a student loan of Rs. 4 lakh.
- He repaid the loan amount after getting a job as an assistant engineer (mining) at Coal India Ltd. in 2011.
- Niranjan is married to Nupur and they both have a daughter.
- Niranjan’s rank of 728 ensured he got the Indian Revenue Service (IRS).
