UPSC Age Limit for General Category

This article discusses the UPSC age limit criterion for aspirants belonging to the general category.

The UPSC has set an age limit for candidates who wish to take the civil services exam. For the general community, the age limit is 32 years. (The candidate should not have attained 32 by 1st August of the exam year). The minimum age you need to have complete to be eligible for this exam is 21 years.

UPSC Age Limit for General Category 2023

UPSC calculates age as of 1st August of the year in which the exam is conducted. So, for the 2023 civil services exam, you should be above 21 years of age as of 1st August 2023. Even the upper age is calculated as of 1st August. So, you should not be more than 32 years as of 1st August 2023.

  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Maximum age: 32 years

This implies that the date of birth of candidates who wish to take the 2023 UPSC civil services exam should fall between 2nd August 1991 and 1st August 2002.

      The numbers of attempts are different for different categories. For General Category candidate, it is 6. For OBC, it is 9. For SC/ST, unlimited attempts are given. You can read the detailed eligibility criteria in the linked article.

      As per UPSC notification 2020, a candidate (GC) must not have attained age of 32 as of 1st August 2020. For 2021 examination also, if the eligibility condition remains the same, a general category student completing 32 before 1st August 2021, will not be able to sit for the exam.

      The candidate from the OBC category shouldn’t have attained 35 as of 1st August 2023. You can sit for 2021 and 2022.

      For a general category candidate, the maximum age limit is 32. UPSC clarifies that the candidate must not have attained 32 as of 1st August of the exam year. Complying with this condition, a candidate who is 32+ stands ineligible for the UPSC 2022.
