  • From an early age, Kamaraj was greatly influenced by both the Indgress and Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The Jallianwala Bagh atrocity motivated Kamaraj, an outspoken opponent of the British Raj, to join the liberation movement.
  • His involvement in the Salt Satyagraha led to the first of multiple incarcerations.
  • Kamaraj was chosen by the Congress Party to represent the Madras constituency in the Constituent Assembly. He didn’t actively take part in the discussions.
  • He also took part in the Neil Statue and Sword Satyagrahas, as well as the Nagpur flag Satyagraha.
  •  He was sentenced to three years in prison in 1942 for his participation in the Quit India Movement.

The Kamaraj Plan

  • Kamaraj is widely known as the experienced Congressman who “saved” the party following Nehru’s death.
  • While Nehru was ill in 1963, the Congress endured crisis after crisis, from defeats in by-elections to the humiliating setback to China in 1962.
  • In order to revitalise the party and reinforce the administration, Kamaraj devised a plan. He suggested that government officials should leave their positions as ministers and work for an organisation, while those working for the group should join the government.
  • Notably, he planned to leave his position as chief minister and join the party in order to counteract the party’s growing danger.
