1. Single-Use Plastic

Prelims: Single-Use Plastic, Clean and Green campaign
Context: The centre has directed the states to phase out the use of Single Use Plastic (SUP) as an essential part of the “Clean and Green” Campaign launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Objective:
- Plastic pollution is the harmful outcome of dumping single use plastics as waste which are non-biodegradable.
- Single Use Plastics cause major harm to the environment and are toxic to the ecosystems and the organisms living in those ecosystems.
- To free the country from Single Use Plastics, the government took the initiative to ban their usage which is conveyed through the “Clean and Green” Campaign.
- The Campaign also focuses on enhancing cleanliness and taking environment-friendly measures.
- The advisory on banning SUPs is in alignment with the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 which is implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
- Plastic waste management and the elimination of SUPs are major focus areas of the mission.
- Under the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2021, the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of carry-bags made of virgin or recycled plastic less than 75 microns has been banned with effect from September 2021.

2. International Telecommunications Union
Syllabus: GS II, International Relations, Important International Institutions
Prelims: About ITU
Mains: Significance of ITU in protecting the rights of people to communicate safely.
Context: India will contest re-election to the International Telecommunications Union Council to promote its shared vision of looking at the world as a connected society and enabling an effective global digital transformation.
An Overview:
- India has been a member of the ITU since 1869 and has participated in the developmental agendas of the Union that are directed towards the benefit of connecting people through Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
- India took part in the World Summit of Information Society 2022 which was organised by the International Telecommunications Union in association with other agencies.
- The WSIS is co-organised by UNESCO, United Nations Development Programme, and the UN Conference on Trade and Development.
- This Summit aims at taking forward the initiatives of ITU and establishing an information society for the world community.
- There were high-level discussions on the topic of “Bridging the Digital Divide”.

3. LiFE Movement

Prelims: COP 26
Mains: Interventions by the government to embrace environmentally favourable practices.
Context: The Prime Minister launched the LiFE movement which was first propounded by him during the 26th Conference of Parties in Glasgow.
Important Highlights:
- The LiFE movement invites a collective effort to develop a sense of an environment-conscious lifestyle.
- The emphasis is on the mindful utilisation of natural resources instead of mindless and destructive consumption.
- This is a significant step that exemplifies India’s commitment to protecting the environment and mitigating climate change issues.
- This movement will provide a platform welcoming multiple ideas across academia, universities, research institutes and industries with an extensive scope of community participation.
