1. Offshore Wind Energy in India

Mains: Scope of wind energy as a renewable energy source in India.

Context: The Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy engaged in a discussion on the transmission planning for offshore wind energy projects in India. 

What is offshore wind energy?

  • It refers to the clean and renewable energy obtained by taking advantage of the force of the wind that is produced on the high seas. 
  • The wind reaches a higher speed with consistency near the seas than on the land where it faces barriers. 
  • Wind energy projects are seated on the seabed and are equipped with technical innovations.
  • There are more wind resources offshore than onshore. 
  • Offshore wind farms can be installed in shallow waters about 60 metres deep away from the coast, marine traffic routes, strategic naval installations and zones of ecological interest.

2. Plenary Session of International Labour Conference of ILO

Prelims: ILO

Mains: Intervening policies to improve labour mobility

Context: The Government of India participated in the Plenary Session of the 110th International Labour Conference of the ILO in Geneva. 

About the Conference:

  • India has highlighted the interventions made to provide social security benefits to the workforce of the country by introducing effective Labour Codes. 
  • It was highlighted that a database of 280 million workers has been created with more than 400 occupations of workers for better implementation of welfare schemes for the workers in the informal sector. 
  • During the pandemic, the women workforce was assisted with cash transfers under the Direct Benefit Transfer Scheme. 
  • To ensure the safe and proper migration of labourers, the Government of India signed labour mobility agreements and social security agreements.

3. India-Vietnam Relations

Syllabus: GS II, International Relations, bilateral agreements involving India

Prelims: India-Vietnam Relations

Mains: Significance of Vietnam in India’s foreign policy.

Context: To expand India-Vietnam defence cooperation and bilateral ties, the Government of India handed over 12 High-Speed Guard Boats to Vietnam during the visit of the Indian Defence Minister to Hong Ha shipyard in Hai Phong. 

Delving Deeper:

  • The boats there were handed over have been constructed by the Government of India as a part of its $US 100 million Defence Line of Credit to Vietnam.
  • India has also invited Vietnam to participate in India’s Defence Industrial Transformation through more engagements and cooperation. 
  • The bilateral talks have fructified into the signing of a Joint Vision Statement on India-Vietnam Defence Partnership towards 2030 to enhance defence cooperation. 
  • An MoU has been signed to simplify the procedures for mutually beneficial logistic support between the two countries. 
  • This makes the vision of Make in India, and Make for the World gather momentum, reflecting the potential of the Indian defence manufacturing sector.

4. Presidential Election

Syllabus: GS II, Polity, Indian Constitution, Significant provisions

Prelims: Election of President, President, Election Commission of India

Mains: Discussing the executive functions of the President of India

Context: India is about to witness the 16th Presidential Election.

Presidential Election:

  • Article 62 of the Indian Constitution states that there shall be an election to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the term of office of the outgoing President and the election shall be conducted before the expiry of the term. 
  • Article 324 of the Constitution read with the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974 vests the superintendence, direction and control of the conduct of election to the office of the President in the Election Commission of India.
