1. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

Context:

3 crore additional rural and urban houses under PMAY a boost for ‘Ease of Living’.

Details:

  • The Cabinet has decided to expand the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and construct 3 crore additional rural and urban houses. 
  • The Govt of India has been implementing Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana since 2015-16 to assist eligible rural and urban households in constructing houses with basic amenities. 
  • All the houses constructed under PMAY are provided other basic amenities such as household toilets, LPG connections, electricity connections, functional household tap connections, etc. through convergence with other schemes of the Central Government and State Governments.

2. World Accreditation Day

Prelims: Quality Council of India; World Accreditation Day

Context:

The Quality Council of India celebrated World Accreditation Day in more than 20 cities across India.

Details:

  • The event was held in New Delhi with the theme “Accreditation: Empowering Tomorrow and Shaping the Future.”

World Accreditation Day:

  • It is a global initiative established by The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) to promote the value of accreditation.
  • It is observed on 9th June every year to highlight the work that accreditation and conformity assessment do to improve so many aspects of life, whether for consumers, society as a whole, business or government.

3. Tax Devolution to States

Syllabus: GS-2, Polity; GS-3, Economy

Mains: Tax Devolution to State, federalism, centre-state relations

Context:

Centre released Rs. 1,39,750 crore installment of Tax Devolution to States. 

Details:

  • It has been decided that apart from the regular release of the devolution amount for June 2024, one additional instalment will be released.  This release cumulatively amounts to Rs. 1,39,750 crore in the current month. This will enable State Governments to accelerate development and capital spending.
  • The Interim Budget 2024-25 has a provision of Rs. 12,19,783 crore towards devolution of taxes to States.
  • With this release, the total amount devolved (for FY 2024-25) to States till 10 June 2024 is Rs. 2,79,500 crore.

4. 112th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC)

Context:

Indian tripartite delegation at the 112th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC).

Details:

  • The 112th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is being held in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • An Indian tripartite delegation comprising representatives from workers, employers and the Government led by Secretary (Labour & Employment), Ms. Sumita Dawra is participating in the session.
  • Ms Dawra addressed the ILC during the Plenary session on “Towards a renewed social contract”, and highlighted the major initiatives of the Government of India towards implementing labour reforms, enhancing social security coverage, providing social security to all, particularly, informal sector workers, promoting female labour force participation and efforts made towards identifying and promoting new employment opportunities.
  • She also held bilateral meetings with senior ILO officials to discuss the issues of further collaboration with ILO. 
  • The focus areas of global skills gap mapping, including feasibility study by ILO and OECD on international reference classification of occupations based on skills and qualifications, universal social security, future of work including green jobs, orderly international migration of skilled workers, opportunities for employment generation etc. were discussed.
  • The Indian delegation showcased the various initiatives of the Indian government to improve the conditions of the labour class in the various sessions of the ILC.

5. New Initiatives of the Atal Innovation Mission

Prelims: Atal Innovation Mission, AIM – ICDK Water Challenge 4.0, Innovations For You – SDG Entrepreneurs of India

Context:

The Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog announced the launch of two initiatives aimed at fostering innovation and sustainability in India: the ‘AIM – ICDK Water Challenge 4.0’ and the fifth edition of ‘Innovations for You’ handbook, spotlighting SDG entrepreneurs of India.

AIM – ICDK Water Challenge 4.0:

  • This initiative is a cornerstone of the Indo-Danish bilateral green strategic partnership and endeavours to address critical water-related challenges through inventive solutions.
  • Currently, the fourth edition was unveiled.
  • The selected teams will form the Indian cohort which will participate in the global Next Generation Digital Action program and engage with young talents from leading universities and innovation hubs of 9 countries (India, Denmark, Ghana, Kenya, Korea, Tanzania, South Africa, Ghana, Colombia and Mexico).
  • Participants from the selected teams can anticipate an engagement in a hybrid innovation journey comprising group work, boot camp sessions, keynotes, and personalized mentoring. 
  • The program encourages the exploration of sustainability, digital solutions, inclusion, and universal design principles. 
  • Active participation is fostered, encouraging collaborative support and knowledge sharing among peers. 
  • Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to showcase innovations at the Digital Tech Summit scheduled in Copenhagen from October 30th to 31st, 2024 funded by the Government of Denmark.
  • The challenge has two tracks:
    • The student journey focuses on Digital Action for Societal Impact, brought forward by external partners through sustainability challenges with a specific focus on digitization. 
    • The Young Entrepreneurs track presents an exciting opportunity for Indian technology start-ups in the early stages to accelerate their ideas and form global partnerships.

  • This is a coffee table book series spotlighting the endeavours of SDG Entrepreneurs of India.
  • This is the fifth edition released by AIM.
  • This edition features 60 entrepreneurs from diverse corners of India, each contributing to societal betterment through sustainable innovations.
