UPSC Topper Karn Satyarthi (AIR 9, CSE 2015)

In 2015, the 9th rank went to IITian Karn Satyarthi, who was all of 25 when the UPSC results 2015 were announced and he was declared a UPSC topper. Karn Satyarthi – Background

  • Karn hails from Dhanbad, although his family origins are in Gaya.
  • His father Praful Sharma is an associate professor in the Civil Engineering Department of BIT Sindri.
  • His mother is a homemaker while his sister is a doctor.
  • Karn finished his schooling from De Nobili School in his hometown Dhanbad.
  • After that, he completed a graduate degree in mining engineering from IIT, Kharagpur in 2014.
  • Even though he got an excellent job opportunity post his degree, he chose to pursue the civil services.
  • He considers gender and caste discrimination as the most pertinent problem facing the country and wants to work to reduce these issues.

Message for Aspirants

Karn says that focus on studies is the only way one can clear the UPSC exam. He suggests aspirants to read a lot of UPSC books and that even without going to a coaching class, one can clear this exam.

While Karn bagged the 9th rank, the first rank went to IAS topper Tina Dabi, who incidentally also had political science as her optional subject.
