Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology - List of Winners (2019-2022)

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology 2021 was recently announced by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This prize is India’s highest science award and was instituted after the founder and director of CSIR. 

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards for the year 2022 were declared in September 2023. The reason for the delay in the announcement of the awards was not revealed by the government.

Facts about the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology

  1. The Prize is given to Scientists for their notable Indian work in science and technology, i.e. applied or fundamental research.
  2. Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) working in India are also eligible.
  3. The (research) work should be primarily done in India during the 5 years preceding the year of the Prize. 
  4. Recommendations for the award are given to the Governing Body of CSIR by the Advisory Committees. These Advisory committees are formed after getting approval of the Chairman of the Governing body of CSIR.
  5. The Director-General of CSIR announces the names of the recipients on 26 September, the CSIR Foundation Day, by the Director-General, CSIR. 
  6. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh.
