  •  A farmer’s son Jaspinder Singh is a resident of Bhullar village in Muktsar, Punjab. 
  • Jaspinder is 26 year old and the first one in the generation to have completed his Graduation.
  • He took Law as his CSE Mains optional subject. Jaspinder says –
“ I did Law because it was one of my ways to get close to Civil Services, my childhood aspiration. A Civil servant makes a difference in the lives of people which gives intellectual satisfaction, for that I wanted to become a Civil Servant.’

  • He bagged AIR 33 in UPSC 2021 that was his 2nd attempt. When asked, he said – 
“In my first attempt I failed to clear prelims but continued studies with more determination,”
  • To be in administration was Jaspinder’s childhood dream, Jaspinder says – 
“Becoming an officer was my childhood dream. When I was in class 7, one of my teachers told me that I have potential to pass the civil services exam. Since then, whatever I chose was inclined towards this.
  • Now that Jaspinder’s childhood dream has turned true, on joining the bureaucracy, he wants to work for the development of rural areas.

Jaspinder’s Educational Background

  • Jaspinder has completed his schooling in Muktsar and grabbed BA LLB degree from the Institute of Legal Studies at Panjab University. 
  • Post the completion of his Graduation, Jaspinder shifted to Delhi for the preparation of civil services. 
“After completing my BA LLB from University Institute of Legal Studies at Panjab University in Chandigarh in 2019, I moved to New Delhi for CSE’s preparation.

  • Jaspinder comes from a farmers background. He lives in Muktsar with his parents and grandparents. 
  • His mother and father both have qualification till class 10.
  • Jaspinder’s family has been very supportive and always motivated him. To which Jaspinder says – 
“There was no financial pressure on me and my family was always very supportive. My mother even moved with me to Delhi in 2019 but we had to return back home due to covid outbreak,” he said.

  • In 2019 Jaspinder moved to Delhi with his mother to start the preparation of Civil services but due to Covid-19 pandemic they had to return to Punjab.
  • Being consistent with the preparation and self confidence is what has helped me achieve success. 
  • Jaspinder believes that revision is crucial for a complete preparation though a bit difficult.
  • He used to devote a good number of hours to study with full concentration.
  • Even after failing the first attempt he was not disheartened rather he used his motivation to continue with the preparation with more determination. In the words of Jaspinder Singh- 
“Consistency and revision have been my mantra for success. Revision is a very difficult task but if you can do this, you can clear CSE. It was also that “During Covid times, coaching centres were all closed, yet maintaining motivation at home was really crucial. Initially, I studied for 8 to 10 hours. Eventually, I increased it to 10 to 12 hours,” he said.

Strategies for UPSC CSE Preparation

  1. Plan out – Set aside at least one year for civil services exam preparation and chart out an action plan to start off with your preparation. 
  2. Plan meticulously: Always have a realistic and achievable study schedule to follow while preparing for UPSC CSE. Making a planner and keeping track of the goals helps too.
  3. Reading from selective study material – Hopping on to different books for exam preparation will only lead you to confusion, hence, pick out a few selected books and materials and try to stick to it as much as you can.
