The results for Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) World University Rankings 2022 were released on June 8, 2021. A total of 1,300 Universities from around the world were featured in this 18th edition of annual ranking and QS released that it was their largest rankings ever.Â
Three of India’s Institutes have also achieved a position in the top 200 Universities across the world. However, the tally of Indian Institutes has remained the same for the fifth straight year. The country’s Universities that have ranked the highest are:
- Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay – 177th Rank
- Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi – 185th Rank
- Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore – 186th Rank

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) is a leading global career and education network and develops and successfully implements methods of comparative data collection and analysis used to highlight institutions’ strengths.
The QS World University Rankings are annually released and comprise an overall and subject-wise analysis of global institutes which is achieved by evaluating six metrics:
- Academic Reputation
- Employer Reputation
- Faculty/Student Ratio

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022Â
The QS World University Rankings 2022 by Subject were released on April 6, 2022. The Quacquarelli Symonds Limited rankings, which are issued yearly, are intended to assist prospective students in locating the best colleges in their field of study. The QS rankings cover a total of 51 disciplines, grouped into five broad subject areas:
- Arts and Humanities
- Engineering and TechnologyÂ
- Life sciences and Medicine
- Natural sciences
- Social sciences and Management.Â
Each category comprises a variety of disciplines for which institutions have been ranked. While four of IIT Delhi’s academic programmes have been named among the top 100, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has topped the ranking on a national level.
The subject-wise rankings of institutes throughout the world are a compilation of several lists. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was ranked first in 12 categories. It was also named the best university in the world for the tenth time in the ‘QS World University Rankings 2022’.
Factors Considered for QS World University Ranking by Subject 2022
To rank universities in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022, five factors were considered:Â
- Academic reputation
- Employer reputation
- Research citations per publication
- H-index
- International research network (by broad-faculty area)

India’s Performance in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022
- The rankings, prepared by global higher education analysts Quacquarelli Symonds, provide an unbiased comparative analysis of the performance of 15,200 individual university courses taken by students at 1,543 universities spanning 51 academic fields and five large faculty areas. The rankings are based on the quality and success of the research, as well as academic prestige and graduate employment.Â
- Among Indian universities, IIT Delhi stands out, with four of its programmes ranking among the top 100 in the world: Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, and Civil Engineering.
- 35 Indian programmes made it into the top 100, ten more than in the 2021 edition of the tables.Â
- India’s highest-ranked university overall is the Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences for Dentistry which debuts at the 18th position while the Indian School of Mines (ISM) University, Dhanbad, also a new entrant, is the second-highest ranked varsity.
- The O P Jindal Global University, an IoE, has been ranked 70th for Law.Â
- IIT Madras is India’s highest-ranked public IoE, placed 30th in petroleum engineering.
- Two Indian universities also achieved top 100 ranks in business and management: IIM Bangalore and IIM Ahmedabad.
- The two new entries in this discipline are Banaras Hindu University (401-450) and Anna University (451-460).

India’s Performance in 2022 World University Rankings
- In comparison to the World University Rankings 2021, where 21 Institutes had ranking within 1000, this year 22 Indian institutions were in the top 1,000 list
- Seventeen of India’s 35 universities have seen a rise in their Citations per Faculty (CPF) score, against only 12 drops in CPF
- No Indian university ranks among the top 250 for faculty-student ratio
