Context: The 50th session of the United Nations Environment Programme commenced in Nairobi.
The major objective: The UNEP is one among the leading voices to address the environmental issues and adopt resolutions to mitigate such issues. The Nairobi session intended to offer a platform for international cooperation and collaboration to tackle the present challenges related to the environment.
The Focus Areas: India’s Vision
- India has been responsive towards taking required measures to tackle the environmental challenges through its active engagement with UNEP.
- The prime focus areas include climate change, conservation of biodiversity and tackling pollution and waste, thereby moving towards sustainability.
- Enormous emphasis has been given on the issue of plastic pollution which is in line with India’s firm determination to a global call for the elimination of single-use plastic which was the central theme of World Environment Day in 2018, hosted by India, with the title ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.
- India submitted a resolution in the 50th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly and called for voluntary global action by countries to reduce plastic pollution by setting up an intergovernmental negotiating committee for a new international legally binding treaty.
- Significance of technology exchange along with the employment of latest digital tools has been highlighted and considered crucial to combat environmental challenges.
- An intense message of hope and optimism has been conveyed by India to build a robust portfolio of projects in engagement with the UNEP to deliver on the dimensions of the 2030 agenda on sustainable development and other multilaterally agreed global environmental goals.

Mains: Scope of emerging technologies in governance
Context: The Tech Conclave 2022 has been organised by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to encourage the usage of emerging technologies in e-governance.
Theme of the conclave: “Next Generation Technologies for Digital Government”.
About the Event:
- The event accentuated the need for technology infusion and innovative products for better and hassle-free delivery of services to the citizens upholding the principles of good governance.
- The exemplary and transformative roles of NIC have been highlighted.
- This created a platform that facilitated a productive interaction between industry and IT experts of the government to promote the capacity building for new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, data analytics, Web3 and Cryptocurrency and so on.
- The conclave aimed at working on a pan-India digital infrastructure and services.
About NIC:
- It is an attached office under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology that provides the infrastructure to assist the IT services of the government.
- It offers special attention to the vision and objectives of Digital India.
- It is headquartered in New Delhi.
- NIC has wide arrays of networks known as “NICNET” which facilitate linkages with the ministries, departments of the government, district administrations and is the primary constructor of e-Governance applications.
- The National Knowledge Network is also managed by NIC.
- It maintains the National Portal of India which acts as the single point to access the information and services of the government.
