IES Examination: An Overview
The UPSC conducts the IES examination every year to hire efficient engineers for various specialized positions in Union Government departments. Since the IES is a Central Civil Service, the recommended applicants may be assigned anywhere in the country.
The exam is held to recruit applicants for engineering jobs in various departments of the Indian government.
The Engineering Services Examination is held every year for four different engineering branches – mechanical, electrical, civil, and electronics and telecommunication.
The IES exam is one of the most demanding examinations in the country. Based on the results of the Engineering Services Exam (IES), the UPSC recommends candidates for Group A and Group B technical positions in the Government of India.

IES Examination Date 2022
USPC released the IES Examination (Prelims) notification on 22nd September 2021. As per the notification, UPSC conducted the IES preliminary examination on 20th February 2022. The candidates had to appear for two objective-type papers:
- General Studies (GS) and Engineering Aptitude (EA)- 200 marks
- Subject-specific paper- mechanical, electrical, civil, electronics and telecommunication- 300 marks
The official notification for IES Examination (Main) is not yet released. However, according to the revised examination calendar, 26th June 2022 (Sunday) is the tentative date for the IES mains examination.
The IES Mains examination will have two subjective-type papers of 300 marks each. Interestingly, both papers will be of the engineering stream (mechanical, electrical, civil, electronics and telecommunication) selected by the aspirant. The duration of the examination will be six hours, with three hours for each paper.
Selection Process
Only candidates who pass both the IES preliminary and IES mains examination can appear for the interview. The prelims will have two parts – General Ability and Engineering Subject. The former paper level will be that of an Engineering/Science Graduate. Only those who qualify for the cut-off score of Papers 1 and 2 of the IES Preliminary Exam can take the IES Mains Exam.
Candidates who qualify for both the Preliminary and Mains exams can take the IES Personality Test. The Personality Exam or interview carries 200 marks. Following the successful completion of the personality test, the commission will verify the individual’s documentation and qualifications.
Based on the final score and the available vacancies, the UPSC recommends candidates for various positions in the Indian Engineering Service.
Furthermore, a candidate can attempt the IES examination any number of times till she or he attains the maximum prescribed age of 30 years.
