Who was Deendayal Upadhayaya?

Deendayal Upadhyaya was a right-wing Indian politician and thinker along the lines of Hindutva ideology as espoused by RSS or Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He was the leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh party.

Deendayal Upadhyaya’s vision was to see India as a free and self-reliant nation not just in the agricultural sector but also in our defence and other sectors.

He was born on 25 September 1916 in the sacred region of Brij in Mathura. His grandfather was an astrologer who predicted that he would become a thinker, a scholar and a great politician though he would not marry.

Deendayal, or Deena as he was called by family, witnesses the passing away of his parents at a young age. After a tragic early life where he also witnessed the passing of his brother and maternal grandfather, he took his education under the Maharajah of Sikar.

He joined RSS in 1937 and, in that same year, completed his BA. In 1951 he convened the Bharatiya Jana Sangh with Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. He had excellent organising skills and rose to become party president. However, he was mysteriously found dead at Mugal Sarai Railway Station in 1968.
