History of the Prabuddha Bharata Newspaper
The four founding members of the prabuddha bharata journal, P. Aiyasami, B.R. RajamIyer, G.G. Narasimhacharya and B.V. KamesvaraIyer, were all closely associated with Swami Vivekananda in Chennai before he departed to America in 1893. At his orders, these four personnel came together to form the Prabuddha Bharata in July of 1896.
Swami Vivekananda was the one to suggest the name of the journal and encouraged his four associates to realize this idea. For two years, the journal was published in Chennai and proved to be very successful. However, due to the sudden and unexpected death of one of the founding members and editor of the journal, B.R. RajamIyer, the publication came to a sudden halt.
Swami Vivekananda had returned to India by 1898 and asked one of his English disciples, J.H. Silver, to aid in the management of the journal’s publication. Silver agreed to Swami’ Vivekananda’s request and also took up the cost for purchasing hand-presses, ink and paper alongside other essential goods required.
The Prabuddha Bharata newspaper resumed its publication in the August of 1898 from Almora, Uttarakhand, under the editorship of Swami’s trusted disciple, Swami Swarupananda. Since then, the journal has been published every month, completing 126 years of its inception this year.

Policies of the Prabuddha Bharata
The Prabuddha Bharata maintains a very strict policy for publishing papers. Most of the articles and papers published in the journal come from the recommendation of a team of internal referees. Papers that are uninvited or not recommended by this team have a rejection rate of around 80 per cent and can take more than a year to process their legitimacy and status of the publication.
The Prabuddha Bharata also has a wide range of policies when it comes to the journal’s editor selection. After its shift to the Advaita Ashrama in the March of 1899, the first three editors of the Prabuddha Bharata also held the position of President at the Ashrama. From the next term, the President and editors were always different. Time and time again, the President of the Ashrama has been named the managing editor or the joint editor. At the same time, the journal also had a legitimate editor.
The first editor of the Prabuddha Bharata was also one of the founding members, B.R. RajamIyer. Currently, Swami Vireshananda holds the post of ‘Editor of the Prabuddha Bharata Newspaper’ from August 2020.
