1. International Women’s Day

Context:

PM salutes Nari Shakti on International Women’s Day.

2. UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Context:

Declaration of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Details:

  • At present, India has 42 sites listed under Tentative List which is a pre-requisite condition for inscription as World Heritage Site.
  • ‘Dholavira: A Harappan City’ has been submitted for nomination of World Heritage Site in 2019-2020.
  • Nomination dossiers of ‘Santiniketan, India’ and ‘Sacred Ensemble of Hoysalas’ have been submitted to UNESCO for the year 2021-22 cycle.

3. Polavaram Irrigation Project

Context:

The tentative date of completion of the Polavaram Irrigation Project has been revised to April 2022.

About the Polavaram Irrigation Project:

  • It is an under construction multi-purpose national irrigation project on the Godavari River in the West Godavari District and East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh.
  • It has been given national project status by GOI.
  • The reservoir covers the famous Papikonda National Park.
  • Even though the first conceptual proposal for the project was mooted in 1941, the foundation stone was laid in 1980.
  • The project will provide irrigation benefits in the upland areas of Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna Districts.
  • It will also provide drinking water supply to Visakhapatnam Township and other towns and villages enroute and industrial water supply to the Visakhapatnam coast based steel plant and other industries in the vicinity.
  • It is also envisaged to generate hydel power, provide navigation facilities, develop pisciculture, and boost urbanisation and offer recreational facilities as well.
  • It is located in Polavaram, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The project is touted as the lifeline of Andhra Pradesh.

4. Schemes of WCD Ministry

Context:

All major schemes of the Women and Child Development Ministry classified under 3 Umbrella Schemes viz. Mission Poshan 2.0, Mission Vatsalya and Mission Shakti.

Details:

  • According to the ministry, the step has been taken for the effective implementation of various programmes and schemes of the Ministry.
  • Mission Poshan 2.0:
    • The Government is merging the Supplementary Nutrition Programme and Poshan Abhiyan to launch Mission POSHAN 2.0.
    • This will include Umbrella ICDS – Anganwadi Services, Poshan Abhiyan, Scheme for Adolescent Girls, National Creche Scheme
  • Mission Shakti:
    • This will consist of the schemes and policies for the empowerment and protection of women.
    • It will include One-Stop Centre, Mahila Police Volunteer, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Women’s helpline and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
  • Mission Vatsalya:
    • This will look into child welfare services and child protection services all over the country.
