UPSC Exam Preparation: Topic of the Day – Agri Udaan
The Union government has announced its intentions to launch the AGRI UDAAN – Food and Agri business Accelerator 2.0, a six month programme for helping shortlisted agri startups with promising models scale up their business operations. Shortlisted 40 startups will have to pitch in front of the panelists during the cohort finalization programme, following which 8-12 businesses will be selected.
Four features that makes this acceleration programme unique are:
- It is for a fixed term.
- Training and selection will be cohort based.
- Programme is mentorship driven
- Culminate into demo day.
Chosen innovative startups would be mentored in to scale up their operations in agricultural value chain for effective growth in agriculture. This move intends to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in agriculture. Through rigorous mentoring, networking and helping the Startups connect with potential investors; this programme intends to give a boost to the startups in the agricultural sector. It aims to attract youth with solid business ideas from rural India and elsewhere, help them transform their ideas into viable startups. This would lead to value addition to farmer’s produce. Under the programme, incubation space will be provided to the startups to run their businesses. They would also be provided access to libraries and research laboratories. Subsequently, certain startups will be assisted for regulatory services like registration of the company, meeting the environment compliance etc. The startups will learn about various facets of capacity building such as preparing a realistic business plan, risk analysis, management of finances, technology commercialization and customer engagement.
ICAR-NAARM’s (Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Academy of Agricultural Research Management) technology incubator, a-IDEA along with IIM Ahmedabad’s Centre for Innovation will be involved in the management and implementation of the programme. Prior to AGRI UDAAN – Food and Agri business Accelerator 2.0, India’s first Food & Agribusiness accelerator 2015 in partnership with IIM-A CIIE, National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) had created a great impact.
