On September 1, 2021, the Ladakh Union Territory administration announced the Black-Necked Crane as its state bird. Eastern Ladakh is the only known breeding ground for black-necked cranes outside China. The majestic bird is found in the Changthang plains and is facing a threat to their existence from expanding tourism and feral dogs who devour their eggs and hatchings.
