1. Inauguration of the defence manufacturing facility in UP Defence Industrial Corridor

Context: Raksha Mantri inaugurated the first operationalised private sector defence facility in Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor in Lucknow. This step exemplifies the strength of public private partnership and offers a major boost to ‘Atma Nirbharta’ in the defence sector taking India a step closer to its ‘Make in India and Make for the World’ ambition.

Significance:

  • The defence manufacturing facility will bring down the country’s dependence on imports of raw materials like Titanium and Nickel Super alloys which are required at all the stages of production.
  • The role of private sector participation in the progress of our defence sector has gathered prominence through this event.
  • In a rapidly changing world with multiple challenges in terms of security, this public private partnership speaks enormously about India’s efforts towards the modernization of the armed forces.

  • The Defence Industrial Corridors are an essential part of the defence manufacturing ecosystem by employing developing technologies and promoting the growth of domestic manufacturers in the MSMEs and Start-ups.

2. The Multicopter DRONE

Context: The National Aerospace Laboratory, a component of  CSIR has collaborated with the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka for the delivery of COVID- 19 vaccines to remote areas with the help of the medium class multicopter Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).

Important Facts:

  • For ease of transportation, the UAV is made up of lightweight carbon fibers with a foldable structure.
  • This drone is referred to as an octacopter with a payload capacity of 15 kg and hovering endurance of 40 minutes.
  • These multicopters have multiple applications in the efficient last mile delivery of medicines, vaccines, food, postal packets, and human organs.
  • NAL’s multicopter consists of powerful embedded sensors for its application in agriculture like pesticide spraying, crop monitoring, mining survey and geo survey mapping.

3. SafaiMitra Suraksha Challenge

Context: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development launched a week-long awareness campaign on the SafaiMitra Suraksha Challenge as a part of ‘World Toilet Day’ celebrations.

About the Campaign

  • This campaign will witness the participation of 246 cities across the country to encourage them to build proper cleaning mechanisms for sewage treatment plants. This will ensure the safety of manual scavengers and prevent deaths.
  • An awareness will be created to eliminate the practice of hazardous cleaning of sewers and septic tanks. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development will flag off the field assessment of the SafaiMitra Suraksha challenge.
  • There will be a range of awards and incentives across the country for the top performing states/UTs.
  • The Ministry also designed standard uniforms for different categories of sanitation workers in association with the National Institutes of Fashion Technology.
  • Skill Development Trainings of SafaiMitras have been conducted which include theoretical and practical sessions by trainers of the Sector skills Council for Green Jobs.
